Report: Miami Heat ‘purposely’ showed no interest in Duncan Robinson to keep him secret

Duncan Robinson Miami Heat

The Miami Heat intentionally didn’t show public interest in Duncan Robinson to keep his talents under the radar prior to the 2018 NBA Draft.
This was revealed recently by Chet Kammerer, the Heat’s senior adviser of basketball operations. By secretly admiring the University of Michigan product, Miami struck gold with Robinson, who went undrafted that year.
“We purposely didn’t bring him in,” Kammerer told the Sun Sentinel.
Robinson was so under the radar that other teams didn’t get a chance to see his pro-level talent.
“He didn’t get invited to Portsmouth. He didn’t go to Chicago,” Kammerer added. “He had very few workouts.”
By ignoring Robinson on purpose, the Heat ensured that no one else saw what Kammerer saw in the 6-foot 7 guard. Rather than spend to get a pick in the second round of the draft, Kammerer hoped to invite Robinson to their summer league team if no one drafted him.
“I saw him work out early,” Kammerer said. “I saw him, I said, ‘Guys, I’m telling you, if this guy is on the board [after the draft], he needs to be on our summer-league team.’”
The gamble paid off handsomely for the Heat as Robinson didn’t get drafted and became a member of the Heat’s roster in the summer league. In one of their games, Robinson nailed 5-of-6 3-pointers against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Unbeknownst to anyone at the time, it was a preview of what the Lakers would see when they faced the Heat in the 2020 NBA Finals. In Game 5, Robinson connected on 7-of-13 shots from beyond the arc to finish the game with 26 points.
More importantly, Robinson was instrumental in extending the series to a sixth game, keeping the Heat’s hopes for a championship alive.
Though the Lakers emerged victorious in Game 6 to win the title, Robinson had a solid performance with 10 points, nine of which came from 3-of-7 shooting from three.

Kudos to Miami's FO for finding top level talent without tanking. I'm a bit jelaous tbh

BTW, kind of hard to know who they have NOT invited who aren't scrubs . lol.

Homey keeps telling you there are guys like that out there. The Wiz had an undrafted rookie last year that dropped 26 in an Association game.

Couldn't resist. It's just some innocent teasing to homie. Maybe I get a warning from the mod gods? They are probably distracted in the General Discussion forum. It's fire down there.

How is the album coming? Bruce released his one week ago.

That's just dumb. If they liked him that much they would have drafted him in the second round to make sure they got him. I could see not bringing him in so no one else gets interested in him but the rest is not true. They got lucky and he's much better than they thought.

Doesnt seem like they made it out that way. Sounds like one dude high up liked him and thought he was worth a look if undrafted. No reason to hype up a guy you dont plan on drafting but would like to have on your SL team.

HEY.... I was all over the Duncan Robinson at Michigan story!!! No one was hyping him in that draftees thread like I was.

Y'all remember a 3pt shooter from Oakland named Travis Bader? he's one of the all time leaders for 3pt makes. I remember sitting here trying to talk myself into thinking he might be able to get picked up for summer league/as an UDFA, but then talking myself out of it. I remember thinking "If Andy Rautins can get drafted, maybe this kid gets picked up?!"

When Duncan Robinson first appeared, I kinda was trying to gauge him "is he more Steve Novak or Travis Bader?!"

Somepoint during that college season I posted "If I could choose anyone in the nation to take a 3 with the game on the line, it'd be Duncan Robinson, no question, and IIRC buddy heild was in college during those years.

I've actually been dead on the money about all the 'nba quality' wings that've passed thru Michigan recently.... low on Glenn Robinson III (who's carved out his niche), high on Hardaway Jr, low on Stauskas, high on Duncan Robinson..

You hype everyone. If you throw 100 darts, at least one will hit.
Everyone? It's like im talking to a bunch of people who are bad at the game "Guess Who?"

Cuz Duncan Robinson was a D3 X-fer! How many of those do I hype??? (Other than Derrick White  )

I hope we are good enough at research and evaluation to not worry about guys other teams aren't bringing in for workouts.
