What's new

Why aint they no blues thread?

Leadbelly was Cobain's favorite. They did the song right.

Yeah, purty damn good, Blood. Mo betta than I expected. I done heard a bunch about this Cobain character, but I think that's the first time I ever heard him sing. Just the name "Nirvana" kinda made me steer away, I spoze.

Them's some good tunes ya done slapped up, there, eh, Blood? R.L., Jimi, and Janis, they ROCK! Them white stripes boys I'm kinda half and half on, I spoze. Bout half the tune was purty faithful to the Son House version, and about half was just ammped-up guitars playin a million notes a minute inna cacaphonic, Stevie Vai kinda way. Never got into that "sound" my own damn self, for whatever reason.

Here's a classic blues tune from the '20's that has since been covered by everybuddy and his brutha, from Big Bill Broonzy, Brownie and Sonny, Sam Cooke, and Lightnin Hopkins to Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, and Eric Clapton. Whoever does it, the tune just flat-out ROCKS. They even made a movie with this title. So many great versions to choose from, but Imma go with Da Killa, eh?:

Wine, it ROCKS, eh!?

Here's another classic tune by Da Killa. Actually, it's an old blues toon done by Granville "Sticks" McGhee, Brownie McGhee's brutha. I think I done mentioned that Brownie had polio as a chile. Sticks got his nickname caused he usta push Brownie round town in a wagon with a stick. Tune was written by Sticks when he was in the army during WWII, but he had to "clean it up" a little to git it recorded. The word "spo-dee-o-dee" Jerry Lee uses just happens to be the right amount of syllables to fill in for the real word used in the original lyrics (MF, all spelled out). If ya watches the vid, they's a nice Memphis Police mugshot of Da Killa innit, eh?

Eighty years ago, on Aug. 7, 1930, Lawrence Beitler took what would become the most iconic photograph of lynching in America...

...The night before, on Aug. 6, 1930, they had been arrested and charged with the armed robbery and murder of a white factory worker, Claude Deeter, and the rape of his companion, Mary Ball.

That evening, local police were unable to stop a mob of thousands from breaking into the jail with sledgehammers and crowbars to pull the young men out of their cells and lynch them.

News of the lynching spread across the world. Local photographer Lawrence Beitler took what would become the most iconic photograph of lynching in America. The photograph shows two bodies hanging from a tree surrounded by a crowd of ordinary citizens, including women and children. Thousands of copies were made and sold. The photograph helped inspire the poem and song "Strange Fruit" written by Abel Meeropol — and performed around the world by Billie Holiday....
