It is not about stats, it is about popularity, either with fans (in big market cities mostly, or big market countries like China) or with coaches. Either way, someone like Hayward or CJ could have numbers and not even be in consideration.

Keep in mind that Paul was averaging 21.5 Points and 9 rebounds going into last years all-star nominations, and he didn't even get NOMINATED, let alone chosen, or voted in. This was after the Miracle at Miami, so if anything his popularity around the league was at an all-time high.
