What's new

Will DeMar DeRozan's contract this offseason set the floor for Hayward's deal?

DeMar averages 18.1 ppg, with all 29 teams in a six point range (15-21)
Gordon averages 14.6 ppg, with all 29 teams in a six point range (11.5-17.5)

Difference is that DeMar scores more, not a variation issue where DeMar has fewer matchup problems.

do you think Haywards 12ppg average vs the Spurs is anomalous ?

This probably has a lot to do with the team scoring average too. If Hayward is on a fast paced team, does he score 25 a game?

Also, what is the variation in Derozans scoring vs the spurs, or better yet, vs the bulls, who have Jimmy Butler at shooting guard to defend him?

What are the teams Derozan struggles scoring against?

Does the NBA play one on one? They don't so playing with your teammates is kind of important. I'd take Hayward or Derozan all day long. His lack of shooting makes it tough for him to make his teammates better.

I was just using it as an example of the differences in skillsets. I think Hayward has proven to be the better player. Thts why I think his contract will set the floor...

If you swapped the players the Raptors would obviously be better..

When DeRozan's running well he still makes his teammates better though..

The Lakers will probably throw him some of that Kobe expiring money and a max deal this offseason.

Gordon will get the max unless he has a serious injury. If you consider age he's somewhere in the 5-7 range on that list of guys teams are willing to give the max. Some of those are restricted and some will get maxed by their own teams which doesn't require a max slot on the market. Cap is supposed to jump from 92 to 108ish so that will create ample spots.

The decision is if we want to give him a 5 year max or not. If someone offered a top 2 pick Id probably move him and reallocate resources. If it was third or lower I'd just roll with Hayward. He's good at basketball guys... Like really good.

Cool... I get it. And yes lakers will offer max. They are desperate. I think raptors move on... Wonder if they'd be interested in burks if that's the case.

Do we know what kinda cap situation the Raptors are in? I know everyone is gonna have extra money but they did just give a bunch to Carroll.

I swear I heard somewhere that Derozan really liked Toronto and wanted to stay long term.
As for Burks...who would they be willing to part with that we would want?

I'd take Hayward. His game can adapt to any style or taking on a lesser role as just a 3 point shooter. Derozan always rates completely average in RPM. Look at Rudy Gay, same type of wing. No 3 point shot, volume scorer, good defender, but always average in the RPM metric year after year. Is RPM lying? Are they really adding some hidden benefit RPM doesn't catch?

I whole heartily believe that Hayward is easily a better player than Derozan...but we could ask the same question about Hayward

the point being that Derozan has been there and apart from the other day has generally been found wanting. I can't see Hayward having the same struggles when he gets to the playoffs

He does like Toronto, but if they lose this series or have a crappy showing in the second round do they want to be married to Derozan for over $25M a year?

They are okay cap wise. They will have to shell out some dough to resign Biyombo and Derozan, but I think they don't have any more wiggle room. Not sure what Ujiri will do.

The timing doesn't really work (because the draft is before free agency) but I could see a Burks and 12 for Ross and 9 swap. I think it's likely a little lopsided in their favor and most of us would think it was highway robbery but we are homers. I think their will be a break in the talent right around 9... not a big fan of Ross but he might figure things out.

He scores less against a top defensive team matched against a top defender. Not unexpected at all. Not an anomaly.

The point is that a 12 ppg for Hayward is as far from mean as a 15 ppg game for derozen.

DeRozan would beat Hayward 1v1 IMO. If they played to 21, 10 times I'd think he'd win 7 of em. Hay's defense is much improved but DeRozan's 1st step is extremely quick, he can still leave him in the dust..

Number one thing that needs to happen is to reformat the All-Star game to feature a few 1v1 games. I would actually watch that.
