WOJ: Korver to Jazz for Burks and 2 second rounders

I just got off work and saw this.

How does Korver change our possible options to add someone in free agency next year?

On the surface I like the move. Something definitely had to be done to change things and I'm glad DL didn't just sit on his hands. I don't think that Korver will instantly change all of our problems but hopefully he provides a spark for this team. His shooting certainly won't hurt.

Burks is an inconsistent back-up SG who needs the ball in his hands and who doesn't always play defense. Plus he's expiring. The Jazz did well to get anything for him. What did the Lakers get back for Jordan Clarkson? Clarkson + Larry Nance = a broken Isaiah Thomas.

Burks' minutes are going to go to Exum, O'Neale and Allen.

We should have moved O'Neal and two second rounders for Kyle 37 year old Korver.

Still can clear max space... worst case he gets a catastrophic injury... we can waive and stretch him with only a $1m cap hit.

We also may keep him... guarantee date is a few days after free agency opens. He's an easy guy to move if healthy. Solid use of space imo.

When you tell the world your team is all about finding diamonds in the rough, it is nonsensical to give away your means of acquiring the diamonds.

As for valuation...the Jazz gave up two second rounders so they could have less cap flexibility (which is what I thought was Lindsey's #1 priority) and acquire a guy on his last leg. Maybe Lindsay was having a hard time getting other GM's to answer his calls after he finessed Gobert and Mitchell from Denver and flipping Hood for Crowder. So he had to take it in the shorts on this one so they other GM's would talk to him again.

Yeah in the KOC days that was true. With the advanced scouting teams pour in today though its really hard to find a 2nd round gem. From 2013-2017, there's been one star 2nd rounder, Jokic. So 1 in 150 players taken, less than 1% chance. 2nd round picks are sold for 1 million or less every year, the Jazz can always buy back in.
 
Everyone focus on his age... his production is still basically better than his career averages. Ray Allen was a key piece on a contender at 37 and 38... could have played a few more years if he wanted.

I just think we are being super dumb here... stop listing his age... he's still bombing threes something we desperately need.

For 2019-20, we have the following contracts:
Gobert $25
Favors $16.9 (team option)
Ingles $12
Exum $9.6
Crowder $7.8
Korver $7.5 (only $3.4 guaranteed)
Mitchell $3.6
Allen $2.5
Bradley $2
Neto $2 (team option)
Niang $1.6 (team option)
O'Neale $1.6 (team option)
Draft pick cap hold $2
TOTAL: $95 million (if we picked up all team options)

Rubio $22.5 cap hold
Thabo $6.8 cap hold
Udoh $4.4 cap hold

The most cap space possible is $69 million if we sent all the team option guys packing and renounced all 3 unrestricted free agents. If we keep the logical guys (Korver, Niang, O'Neale and Neto) and let Favors and the 3 free agents walk, we have $77 million committed to 11 players plus the draft pick. That gives us $32 million of cap space which is enough for a max contract.

I mentioned earlier that you are absolutely not going to get a star in the 2nd round (well apparently you proved me wrong with Jokic), but there are plenty of solid rotation players to be had. And "advanced scouting". lol. I'm not buying that crap for a second. You aren't going to have 4th round Mark Eatons anymore, but scouting hasn't taken some kind of special leap forward in the last 20 years. It is still largely unpredictable how a prospect will actually turn out, and the lower into the draft the more unpredictable things get.
