Absolutely, positively, scream out loud yes.
Look at this team:
Burke
Hayward - Burks
Barnes - DMC
Favors -
Bogut - Kanter
That team gets a 6-8 seed this year and competes for a title in 2 years.
I don’t know if the Jazz could re-sign Carroll under this scenario, as the fit is tight enough that it would land both teams at right about the salary cap as is (though I don’t know the intricacies of the salary cap for low-salary FA signings).
Here’s how I’d sell it to GS:
a) “If I told you at the beginning of the process of chasing Dwight that you could get him in exchange for Bogut and Barnes for Dwight while also getting out of the luxury tax, would you be interested?” (I suspect the answer is a strong yes, since Dwight for Bogut and Barnes or Thompson with no luxury tax relief is what I’ve heard they’re prepared to do in S&T). “Since you end up better off with this deal than you imagined you could at the start, you should be willing to overlook the fact that you’d give us Bogut and Barnes for seemingly nothing.”
b) “Even with Barnes and Bogut gone, you still have enough left with Curry, Thompson, Lee, Green, etc to make a strong pitch to Dwight that you’re the best chance for a championship team both in the short and long term.” (I’d think only Houston might rival GS out of the 5 current contenders. And I think Dwight’s skills fit better with GS than with Houston.)
c) “If you’re willing to spend Bogut and Barnes for Dwight anyway and you’re sure Dwight wants to play for you, trading with us is much safer than trying to negotiate a S&T for Dwight. The Lakers might turn down a S&T if they believe that they’re #2 after GSW. Or they might turn down a S&T altogether and decide that it’s better to just blow things up rather than just get back a couple of pieces they’re not all that enthused about. Or, if the Lakers decide a S&T is the best option, who’s to say that they won’t explore options with the Clippers (for Griffin/Bledsoe, who would fit the Lakers’ needs much better), the Nets, or even the Heat before making the deal?”
