Would you sign Gobert to 4/135?

Would you want to retain Gobert at 4/135?

Previous DPOY - a guy who is basically the heart and soul of the team, but not its best player, and maybe not even its second best player, but it's best defender by far. Rudy's role on our club is very similar to Draymond's with GSW.
Gobert is the best player on this team, and likely will be next year, as well. Perhaps not in two years.

Interesting article on espn today. It’s about Giannis and his decision to sign the supermax with the Bucks or not and the big ripple effect it could have. For a while it talks about Gobert and the writer mentions Utah and Gobert perhaps finding a middle ground at 4 years/135 million.

So would you do that deal?

Absolutely. $135-140 over 4 years seem fair for both sides, based on how the Jazz play.

If we traded Rudy, we could then trade Conley without much flack. Between the two deals, we get long terms pick value and hopefully at least 2 young players to groom alongside a long term vision with Donovan. Guys like Thybulle, Milton, Collins, Hunter, Huerter, etc.

I don't like taking a step back, but I also don't like being capped out or even paying the luxury in order to fight for the 2nd round.

We'd be lucky if any of those guys turned out to be as good as Conley, let alone Rudy. This strikes me as shaking things up for the sake of shaking things up.

This is the garbage that gets us in trouble when we value our own players. Yes, over the course of a regular season, Rudy is probably our most important player. The entire team is set up around him so of course he would be considered our best regular season player. We play to his strengths and we do our best to limit his weaknesses. But it's all built around him.

However....

Titles are won in the playoffs. Rudy is not our best player in the playoffs. Don was the best player in 2018 and 2020 without question. In 2019, you might have an argument that they were equally important. On the flip side, an argument could be made that Rudy was just part of the supporting cast for the OKC series. He wasn't the 2nd best, just part of the group that supported Don to win. For much of that series, Rubio and Favors were just as important.
