Zach Lowe: Utah trade 1st rounder for Batum

The right addition could be huge for this team. I can imagine Batum being that piece, but I can also imagine it being a dumb move. With such uncertainty and at such a ridiculous salary, it's a hell ****ing no on the lottery pick. Some other assets, though? Maybe.

Portland would to get rid of him only way I trade a first for him if it is highly protected.

trade Burke
move burks to back pg
draft hezonja
bring tomic over

exum, burks, cotton
hayward, hood, millsap
Batum, hezonja, ingles
favors, booker
Gobert, tomic

Don't underestimate Batum. It's true he hasn't been great after his divorce and recent injuries but he was and still can be nearly a allstar.

He can shoot 3s, he can penetrate, he defends well even vs stars, he's a good passer, he can steal and block too. He just lacks a bit more fire inside. Quin Snyder could turn him into a allstar. It's only in the head for Batum. He just has to understand he must attack the basket a bit more and he's too unselfish.

I think it's more along the lines of "If they lose LMA, then they blow it up and try to rebuild around Lilliard."

Yeah but if Matthews hadn't been injured, you can say they'd probably be a lot more competitive in the playoffs and therefore less chance of LMA leaving.

I mean we weren't even talking about LMA leaving up until the injury happened.

So another starter who won't attack? Great, just what need...

Batum would be a salary dump for Portland. I wouldn't give them anything but second rounders. But TBH, I'd rather have Danny Green.

All I remember is there were hundreds of "Batum > Hayward" during Hayward's contract year, so acquiring said player must at least be worth discussing
The danger in Batum, even if he returns to 2013/2014 form, is he is unrestricted in 2017 when the cap explodes. The Jazz could easily get outbid.
For this reason I would only give the OKC first.

Batum averaging 18-7-5 on 42% FG and 42% 3pt shooting (against one of the top defensive teams) and his game is in the toilet.....

Dude has injuries and just got in a nasty divorce. So he had a bad year. He obviously had some negative outside factors and health problems.

He is young enough to grow with our team and he is great friends with Gobert. Yeah he isn't a rim attacker, but we have Burks and Hayward for that.

I'm not saying I love him, but if the price is right we would be dumb not to take him.
