Deedee Corradini, the first and only female mayor in the history of Salt Lake City, died Sunday at her home in Park City. She was 70.

"Our amazing mother, wife, sister, aunt, friend, and mentor, died today at her home in Park City, surrounded by the light, love, and gratitude of her loved ones," her family said in a statement released by Women's Ski Jumping USA. "She fought a fierce six-month battle with stage 4 metastasized non-small cell lung cancer [the non-smoking type]. Our lives will never be the same without her, yet we celebrate her legacy with such joy. We feel her grace, and know she will continue to guide us deeply though her courageous spirit and extraordinary light that lives within us all."

Corradini served as the president of Women's Ski Jumping USA for more than 10 years.

Yeah, everyone seems pretty broken up about it. I knew it would hit people pretty hard but I didn't expect this thread to get the massive outpouring of love that it has.

I'm pretty sure no more than 10% of JazzFanzzers even know who she is. I'm old enough to remember her, and I was pretty young when she was mayor. I was at some meetings where she was in charge, and I thank her for listening to me a couple of times. She was fair-minded, and principled, and would not roll over for another Democrat on the wrong side of the issue. She took my side when it was a long-time Democrat, a local SLC "Committee on Foreign Relations" member, and the donor to the Party for the State Dem headquarters, on the other side of the table.

I was the little guy who opposed the big guy's plan to raze some houses and put in a parking lot. . . . .

I'm pretty sure she made the slc Olympics happen

No question about her enthusiasm and knowledge, if not ability, in women's skiing and athleticism in general.

The Utah (Salt Lake City/Park City) Winter Olympics was simple destiny, and it will repeat.

Competitive sports is a good moral footing for public service. The simple acknowledgement of "rules" in the game renders an athlete superior to smucks like Harry Reid and Obama. . . Bush(es). . . .Clintons. . . . and almost all Republicans too.

Without that sense of "rules" and "fair play" politics becomes evil.

I thought she was one of the Sopranos or something.
