J. Edgar Hoover’s persecution of homosexuals throughout his career has sparked demands for his name to be removed from the FBI building in Washington.
The iconic FBI director, who played a vital role in its foundation in 1935, is the subject of a new documentary about a federal war against ‘sexual deviates’.
The documentary – ‘Uniquely Nasty: The U.S. Government’s War on Gays’ – has been released by Yahoo News this week.
It reveals the true extent of the persecutions against homosexuals working for the bureau, referred to as ‘sex perverts in government service’.
The FBI’s ‘sex deviates’ programme is the main focus.
Hoover launched the secret initiative in 1951, directing FBI agents to collect the names of homosexuals working for the federal government.
A previously undiscovered memo has come to light that reveals the plot was far more far-reaching that historian’s initially realised.
Hoover's memo, sent to 40 of the bureau's top officials, read: ‘Each supervisor will be held personally responsible to underline in green pencil the names of individuals… who are alleged to be sex deviates.'
They were instructed to file reports detailing not only the name of the ‘alleged sex deviate’ but also the names of ‘other alleged deviates with whom he associated’. A collection of 360,000 files on gays and lesbians in government service was put together, will into the 1970s.
This information was then used to force the ‘deviate’ out of their position.
Hoover’s abuses are alleged to have continued throughout his 37-year career at the United States’ leading law enforcement officer.
He remained as director of the FBI until his death in 1972, aged 77.
After watching the film, Rep Steve Cohen, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, told Yahoo: ‘I don’t think his name should be on that building.
‘What he was doing was reprehensible – and it doesn’t represent American values.
‘It was pretty disgusting to see some of the actions that were being engaged in.’
The demands for Hoover’s name to be removed from the building are the latest uprising in a years-long campaign.
Historians have claimed that Hoover is guilty of multiple abuses of the bureau’s resources, including wiretapping of civil rights leaders, such as Martin Luther King Jr.
