Obtaining a floor-spreading big

I think we've got a decent shot at being middle of the pack playoffs in the western conference. Unlike the year we got swept in the playoffs, I believe that's good experience. I think a decent backup big would have a lot more value than the initial value of the individual player.

Which would, at best, be an exit in the 2nd round. Let's develop all of our assets together, because our ceiling of this team with a well-developed Trey Lyles >>>>> ****ing Steve Novak and Matt Bonner. C'mon dude.

I am surprised this thread is still alive. The stretch 4 concept is ludicrous. Time to move on to a new ludicrous topic.

it's not a ludicrous concept. It's ludicrous to ignore the benefits that floor-spacing at the 4 or 5 brings-- but it's equally ludicrous to necessitate the presence of one at the expense of maximizing your team's probability to win a championship. Like really, Andrea Bargnani? He can't even hit threes anymore. He was losing minutes to Aldrich, Lou Amundson, and Travis Wear.

If you do want a relatable example of the benefits of stretching at the bit position, harken back to those DWill/Booz P&Rs with Memo stretching at the 5-- essentially an impossible cover.

I agree with what you are saying here. I still think the "stretch 4" concept is ludicrous. It is about putting together the best team you can with your available resources. If a player is available with those traits and it makes sense with what you are trying to accomplish, then nab him. But to hang so much as many do here on getting a "stretch 4" at all costs is ridiculous. To me it is really nothing more than making best use of your player's strengths. If that is one of their strengths, then great. But to put it in a category all by itself is ridiculous, imo.

The Jazz aren't operating under this pretense though! Not yet. Not this off-season! These recent moves appear to be of the cautiously optimistic, bargain hunting variety, no?

First, Memo ain't walking through that door, and as you mentioned, he isn't losing his job to Aldrich, Lou Amundson, and Travis Wear.

Second, There is FAR les pressure on our offense to score 107 a game because of the way we play defense, which is a much better model to go into the playoffs with. There aren't many stretch 4's that are going to handle Favors on Defense. But with Gobert at the rim, Favors can wander out to where they are. Our starting front court is a dream. . .

The Jazz fell into a defensive team, they didn't think Gobert was going to turn into a defensive stud and that Dante was going to be able to keep up defensively with the best PG"s in the league.
They were happy with the youth of Favors,Kanter,Hayward,Burks ,and Burke....but Gobert and Exum changed the game plan ,you play to your teams best chance of winning

Defense is the calling card now, Gobert ,Favors,Hayward,Hood,Exum ...6th man Burks.........these guys can be the #1 defensive team....what i see happening this year,is the pace really picking up this year as Exum is showing signs of really picking up the tempo...when that happens ,athleticism shines and Utah has plenty of that

Nows not the time imo. Lets develop our guys. Weve got 10 to 15 years of good bball ahead of us if we can keep the group happy. Lets focus on that.

It seems to me having a stretch 4 has certain benefits. However, many of us seem to have forgotten how Milsap became one. When he was drafted he was a rebounding machine. He worked his tail off improving every year, adding range to his shot. By the time he left Utah he had slowly over the course of several years developed range nearly out to the three point line. So, he did what he did every off season, took a couple of steps back and ala, he was soon hitting from behind the three point line.

As others have mentioned, we've seen Favors doing the same thing, adding range. No doubt Booker too is working on this. I suspect we'll see the same from all of our big men. Do I anticipate Rudy shooting from three point range? Not anytime soon, but both Lyles and Pliess may get there in a year or two. Personally, I'd rather see everyone working on free throws. Shooting 80% from the line, with our defense, would be much more valuable when it comes to winning games, than having a stretch 4 IMO.

Pleiss is already a stretch 5. He as some range and a nice shot and is an excellent free throw shooter. Sign him and we are done.

This times over 9,000. I can't count how many times I had a terrible night because Jazz lost from FT attempts.
