Spending a lot of time in this general area I have seen wildfires before. I have been rerouted and stopped on the freeway for it as well. Never saw anything like this. I just could not imagine.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A fast-moving wildfire swept across a Southern California freeway in a mountain pass, destroying 20 vehicles and sending motorists running to safety before burning at least four structures. Two people suffered minor injuries, authorities said Friday.

The fire started in the Cajon Pass along Interstate 15 — the main highway between Southern California and Las Vegas — and quickly chewed through bone-dry brush. As flames closed in, drivers and passengers ran from their vehicles.

A giant wildfire currently spreading through Southern California’s Cajon Pass is burning cars on the freeway in what the San Bernardino County Fire Department is calling a “multi-casualty incident.” But the firefighters also issued a report that due to a drone seen flying in the area, they couldn’t get their helicopters to the scene right away.

What’s been named the North Fire has burned about 500 acres near the 15 freeway, which heads northeast to Vegas. Firefighters had closed traffic in both directions when suddenly the grass fire jumped into the freeway and set several cars aflame. Firefighters began mobilizing their aircraft, but due to a drone seen in the air, they were forced to ground their helicopters which were starting to drop water on the burning cars.

Apparently no one here cares.

I've seen some car fires on I-15. Traffic backs up for miles.

Makes me wonder why in a pic with twenty cars on the freeway only three are burning, and they aren't in a cluster. There's non-burning cars in between. What makes/models of cars are today's Pintos?

Massive storms rolled in and the fire that was left headed toward the boonies pretty much right after you posted this so that's probably why not anything to discuss. Some of the coolest jaw dropping drives you could ever possibly have are dropping into some of those SoCal canyons while the fire season is going on though. Just awesome. One good thing among the bad that fire can cause.

The drone v. fire suppression crew controversy is definitely interesting though. I'm sure there are some laws forthcoming there.

Wow!

My tarded *** neighbor launched one of those paper lanterns last night. It pissed me off. I had just returned from camping with my kids. It seemed dryer than an average July. I pull into my driveway and my stupid neighbor is releasing an incendiary bomb.

Wait...so the helicopters won't fly because they are afraid they might run into a drone? That seems kind of odd. Someone should warn them about birds also posing potential hazards.

I think typically birds "know" to get out of the way - - drones don't.

I was flying in to Long Island MacArthur airport last fall and the flight was diverted for another pass around the airport because of a drone in the area. You could see it out the window. It seemed somewhat surreal.
