Preseason conclusions after two games

Does anyone know why Cotton isn't getting run in the pre-season? I live on East coast so cant stay up for games but watched disappointingly the entire first game and he never got in. Neto looks good although imo nothing overly impressive. Looks like a Delladova type player that is more pesky than a good player but regardless if the PG situation is set w/ neto and burke I hope they let Cotton go to find a team in a better situation (cough Knicks)

I would say that Neto has already shown more passing and defensively ability than Cotton. Cotton is clearly a better shot creator/maker. So it comes down to what is valued in a backup point guard.

As for why he isn't playing, I think the team feels like they need to give Trey a chance to proven he has made the changes they asked for.

They brought Neto over and need to figure out what they have.

Cotton is somewhat of a known quantity.

I expect they will keep him as insurance for a potential Trey Burke trade or injury.

Also I believe his fully guaranteed date is later in the year. So it doesn't hurt the Jazz's flexibility to keep him.

Seems reasonable to conclude the Jazz plan was to cut Cotton the day they signed Neto. They never planned to carry 4 PG's on this year's roster. The Exum injury seemingly gave Cotton renewed life, but I don't think the staff believes he belongs on an NBA floor. Even in the now astronomically tiny chance he makes the roster, his first action might be 5 minutes of garbage time 75 games into an 82 game season. So, obviously, that's no career and no development as a player. They've given up on him, but that was a decision they came to long before now. They just kept him around for training camp, no more. They just don't see him as a guy with NBA ability. I should think he showed enough that maybe a guard starved club might sign him. Time will tell. I hope so. Last place I want to see him is with the Jazz. But really, I can't imagine them signing him now. They never intended to, and signing Neto was a very obvious signal that they have no interest in Bryce at all. They never did, but maybe they at least gave him some exposure, should there be interest elsewhere......

Why would the Jazz cut him when they can keep him as cheap insurance this year? Exum in the roster but he isn't available to play.

Insurance? You know if another PG gets hurt, they can just cut one of the non-guaranteed contracts that does make it and sign another PG.

Withey is a much better talent IMO than Cotton. Cotton is a good player, but Withey is a 7' that blocks shots, gets rebounds, and can hit his FT's (from what I've seen in the preseason). A huge part of the Jazz's identity is defense, so it makes more sense to have insurance for blocking shots than it does for having below average PG insurance (you can get that whenever you want).

If Burke doesn't get the job done, it's more likely they trade for an actual PG than start playing Cotton major minutes.

The fact that Quin is giving a 3-wing line-up more run (even with Hayward sitting) and not giving Cotton any is very telling. Even Cooley got in the game for a few minutes.

I only watched the first half of the second game. Here's what I saw-

Our starting 5 looked great.
-It was so much fun to watch the outlet passes go to Burke, Burks, or Hayward and then watch them run.
-Booker didn't look like a starter. We'll look even better when Favors is out there.
-The defense was stifling. We looked really, really good. Deflections every where on the guard line because Gobert is an anchor down low.
-Burks and Burke looked great.

Our bench needs help
- They sagged off Neto and he was useless on offense. Before he came in the ball was moving around and the offense was flowing, when he got in he dribbled at the top of the key for 10 seconds.
- Neto is pesky on defense. He's got hope if he can shoot.
- Dennis Lindsey blew the Kanter trade. We got three rather poor backup centers for a max player. I'll give Pleiss more time, but so far I'm not impressed.
- Hood is good. Lyles looks like a rookie, but he'll be good.
- Millsap looked better, wish I could have seen more of Ingles.

Although I love everyone on this roster, we might need to make some trades to be able to make a deep playoff run. Then again, Snyder is a magician. Maybe he can figure it out.

in fairness, he played most of his minutes in the second half of last game at the 4. It may take him some time to get used to those matchups and spots. He played good D on the final few plays.

for some reason, Ryan Kelly was getting by a few people last night. That little change of pace thing he's doing from the three-point line (and just beyond). He couldn't really do **** with the ball afterward, though.

I disagree with your characterization of his role, respectfully. Specifically with "decent" attached to back-up. Festus Ezeli is a decent back up. I think the Jazz will begin the regular season with Withey or Cooley as the backup center.

Cooley has very little chance of making the final roster. Withey could end up playing more than Pleiss initially but Pleiss will be on the roster and get playing time.

no reason to cut Cotton (or any other non-guaranteed guy) so far before his guaranteed date if we have a 15th spot available.

I do agree Johnson > Cotton.

Why has everyone all the sudden given up on Pleiss? He is way better than I thought he would be.

I like Pleiss. I don't know if people missed him dunking on fools and then swatting the ball away like a badass. Pleiss and Withey is a bit redundant, but other than tipping two balls that were on the rim (which will be a tough habit to break) he has been pretty good. Pleiss looks like a good backup center... were we expecting anything else?
