Preseason conclusions after two games

I love Neto's energy but his shooting form from deep looks akin to one of those people they select from the crowd who gets a gift certificate to Arby's if they make a 3. He's going to have to improve big time if he's going to make it in The NBA.

for some reason, Ryan Kelly was getting by a few people last night. That little change of pace thing he's doing from the three-point line (and just beyond). He couldn't really do **** with the ball afterward, though.

I think when you know a guy is a spot up shooter you close out hard... especially if you know/think he can't do anything to hurt you. Also, bigs aren't great at closing out on the perimeter in general. Trey and Booker blow by people regularly... it's what they do after that matters.

Burks needs to play at the PG at times, just so we can have Burks, Hayward and Hood in the game. Whoever the other teams PG is guarding of those 3, give him the ball. Would love to see Burks with a PG on him and both Hayward and Hood to spread the floor.

but it seemed like even the Lakers' broadcast guys were a bit surprised/amused.

He isn't a good shooter... his euro numbers are not great. He is clearly not quite comfortable shooting yet. I want to see him when he settles in a bit. He hit one last night... would like to see him in a catch and shoot situation before I make any judgements.

no reason to cut Cotton (or any other non-guaranteed guy) so far before his guaranteed date if we have a 15th spot available.

I do agree Johnson > Cotton.

I think they do so to maintain flexibility and because they will use the 3 wing line ups you were pushing for. He becomes expendable.

Either way he will be the last man and never see the floor. And I like him. this is not a bash on him at all, just what I think happens after 2 games.

He may not have done it much... Those guys are tool bags. I would rather the bigs make guys like Kelly drivers rather than spot up shooters. His layup attempts were comical.

We shouldn't get blown by that hard, but you close out to shooters that can't dribble hard.

Also, Kelly is not a terrible player... he's just easy to make fun of.

we don't lose flexibility if we keep a 15-man roster and one (or more) guys is un-guaranteed.

I think we carry 15 until the guaranteed date, no question. Maybe longer.

What is that date? I think it is possible that Cotton lasts until that.

The Johnson vs. Cotton thing sucks. I really like both guys. The NBA should have an IR spot when you lose a guy like we lost Exum. I think both guys play in the NBA this year. I think Cotton would play more than Johnson for us... we are one injury away from him playing 15-20 minutes a night.

I wonder if the Bobcats would trade for Johnson since losing MKG. Wouldn't give up much obviously, but it'd be nice to get something for him.

I disagree. Snyder is already going away from that with his 3 wing sets. He closed last nights game with one. Not even our best one imo.

If an injury to Burke or Neto happens I think we see even more of 3 wing sets and Cotton stays on the bench except garbage time.

I see that... well reasoned.

The only issue I have is that neither Millsap or Johnson are ball handlers. I think three wings works great when its Hay, AB, and Hood... Jingles and Millsap a little, but not too much. I think we see 3 wings for 8-16 minutes a night depending on effectiveness/matchup.

The other issue I have is we have 3 studs at the wing, and we have no idea what we have a pg. I think we need as many chances to hit as possible at that position. Neto may have some struggles and if they felt it necessary to backup Pleiss with Withey maybe they feel Cotton could operate in that capacity.

I really like both guys and it will suck to let one loose (assuming Withey is in).

I think Burke and Neto are known quantities to the coaching staff. Exum is not but Exum is injured. If he wasn't we would not be looking at 3 wing sets.

This might be over-emotional, but I'd even consider starting MILLSAP/JOHNSON-BURKS-HAYWARD over BURKE-BURKS-HAYWARD. Let Millsap or Johnson totally disrupt things on the defensive end, and tell them to pull the trigger on open corner3s. We need a floor-spreader who knows he's the fifth option. Millsap did well as a starter last year.

Yeah I think that is pushing it a little. I think Burke plays well as an off ball player in the starting lineup.

Here is another conclusion.

The Jazz D has stuck around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jazz have allowed 94.9 ppg for 1st in the NBA. (Memphis is 2nd at 95.1 and then its another 2 ppg till SA)

Burke is known, to a point... I still think he is improving and we are still figuring out the best ways to use him. I think Neto is pretty unknown as to what he can do in the NBA.

If Exum wasn't hurt I think Cotton would have already been gone. That may be another way to look at it that adds credence to your point on Johnson. Who is most likely to make the team next year as well. Both guys are signed to unguaranteed deals for next year.

I only watched the first half of the second game. Here's what I saw-

Our starting 5 looked great.
-It was so much fun to watch the outlet passes go to Burke, Burks, or Hayward and then watch them run.
-Booker didn't look like a starter. We'll look even better when Favors is out there.
-The defense was stifling. We looked really, really good. Deflections every where on the guard line because Gobert is an anchor down low.
-Burks and Burke looked great.

Our bench needs help
- They sagged off Neto and he was useless on offense. Before he came in the ball was moving around and the offense was flowing, when he got in he dribbled at the top of the key for 10 seconds.
- Neto is pesky on defense. He's got hope if he can shoot.
- Dennis Lindsey blew the Kanter trade. We got three rather poor backup centers for a max player. I'll give Pleiss more time, but so far I'm not impressed.
- Hood is good. Lyles looks like a rookie, but he'll be good.
- Millsap looked better, wish I could have seen more of Ingles.

Although I love everyone on this roster, we might need to make some trades to be able to make a deep playoff run. Then again, Snyder is a magician. Maybe he can figure it out.

Agreed with most of your post...good job. Neto was useless on offense...is bull hockey. He had some great assist.

Dennis Lindsey blew the Kanter trade. We got three rather poor backup centers for a max player. You have to be kidding me. Just because someone was dumb enough to give Kanter the money...we know his real value. Also, who wants a player that admits he did not give 100%, when he was with us. I sure the hell don't.
