So you foul and give more free throws? Or just contest a play to stop a fast break? It would give defense a time out effectively. I see so many problems with this idea. It will never happen. Ref mistakes are a part of the game.

I would rather have a fourth ref watching from the angle of cameras.

Well you foul 'only' if you're confident about your challenge. If the challenge is successful then obviously the foul you've just committed is nullified because it would have been a dead ball situation if the ref had gotten the call right in the first place.


So you've got nothing to lose if your challenge is successful.

Spot on. The purpose is not to make the losing team feel better or to correct an uncorrectable wrong.

I think this should be broadened and they should release referee score for entire games. They evaluate officials constantly. Let's see the scoring. It would either refute or reinforce beliefs about "star preference" and "big market preference" and "my team always gets screwed" You could do a 1-5 scoring with 3 being "subjective call" (too close to call) to 1 "call clearly missed" to 5 "call clearly correct" and 2 "likely but not definitively wrong" and 4 "likely but not definitively correct"

The NBA should really re-look at this whole process TBH. It means nothing to the losing team to have this report but no repercussion.


I think teams should have at least 1 "Challenge" per game where they can have the call or non-call in crucial moments or possession in the game "reviewed" by the replay centre, ala the NFL.


They already have the resources to do it (i.e., the Replay Centre in Secaucus NJ), having only 1 challenge per game means it won't take up too much time neither, but overall it would make for a much fairer game and a just outcome.

That would be nice. We would win a few more games for sure (and likely hardly lose any games based on the proposal).

IIRC, the NBA considered this but decided it would not be feasible. It is why they limit what can be reviewed in the last two minutes. What I don't understand is how some calls that are reviewable, which seem to be close calls, are not reviewed in the last two minutes. I've seen a few this year that on replay on my DVR appear to have been the incorrect call.

May be it's because I'm watching a lot more non-jazz games this year, but I've noticed that there have been quite a few more incorrect 'crucial' calls this year compared to previous years. I know the Raptors lost at least 1 game earlier in the season because of a wrong foul call.


The NBA should at least look at how many incorrect calls were made this year compared to the last and if there is a noticeable increase then may be consider a review process.


I dunno may be it's just wishful thinking. I watch English Premier League sometimes (my team is Arsenal), and they could also benefit from a review system there since 1 goal is worth so much more than a FG in basketball, a wrong call by the ref in the EPL could be very costly.

On a tangent, I am convinced Tim Donaghy threw games even though the FBI couldn't prove it. There is so much movement in a game that a ref can "throw" a game while making legal calls.

Apparently there was another controversial call in the final 2 min. of the Miami vs Pacers game recently where a moving screen of Bosh was not called and D Wade scored to tie and later went on to win.


The NBA later said that they also got that call wrong as well.
