The Jazz drafting philosophy sucks

It's always wise to remember former posts before making bold threads. I can pat myself on the back for really liking Hassan Whiteside and saying the Jazz should have traded down (or acquired a late first to get him). But I also liked Xavier Henry. OOPS!

At least I had Cole Aldrich as a certain bust. But it would have been good to trade down and end up with Bradley or Bledsoe in the late teens and then have gotten Whiteside in the early 20's. Hindsight, of course. And it really took failure and being out of the league for Whiteside to get his **** together. Not certain that Hassan having a guaranteed contract for 3 years would have motivated him enough. I just looked at his journey back to the NBA and it's pretty impressive. After being cut by the Kings in 2012, he played for 7 different teams (DLeague and overseas) before Miami took a chance on him.

Can we please stop bitching about drafting Hayward over Paul George? Teams before us drafted far worse players than Hayward.
Fair or not, the comparisons and bitching will never stop unless Hayward magically becomes a bigger star than PG. It's always the player drafted right before the superstar/HOF'er that catches hell and is forever second guessed with "what if" scenarios...Sam Bowie could probably explain this far better than I can.

I see absolutely no problem with the way the Jazz are heading.

The are offering a future that is brighter by far and less mediocre compared to the previous seasons. If they somehow fail to show patience, the whole plan will fail. So I hope they shut their ears to criticisms like why the Jazz cannot grab a superstar in free agency or they should tank for the next Lebron or whatever. The Jazz have the right mentality to build up and play this game right.

Maybe, the next step can be grabbing a more experienced star player that can lead and score and trying hard for him. But they have to be careful since most of the time acquiring stars can have negative effects on the chemistry.

Wherever this goes, the main thing is to stay hardworking as much as possible and don't settle for what your current performance gives you. Or you are going to deplete like a battery soon and lose the motivation to become a contender.

Just to be fair, Hack doesn't get paid millions per year to make personnel decisions. DL and other Jazz FO staff do. Thus we might reasonably expect DL and FO staff to make better personnel decisions on average than Hack, and it is fair to judge DL and FO staff in hindsight as to whether they are doing their job well, just like every job review looks at past job performance. I'm not saying I agree with Hack, just that I think some of the criticism leveled at his is unfair.
Just to be fair, there's a very good reason that Hack doesn't get paid millions per year to make personnel decisions, and he's proving it in this thread.

No big busts in the first round recently: Hayward, Kanter, Burks, Burke, Gobert, Exum, Hood, Lyles seems like a pretty good crop. Could hit on a few more 2nd rounders, but ehh, can't make 'em all.

Some of KOC's draft picks, as well as his decision to not fully rebuild, were questionable but since DL has taken over I don't see how you can really complain about the direction this franchise is headed. Obviously Burke is the glaring mistake, but based on the fact that Corbin appeared to have had the backing of ownership & DL drafted a PG the following year, I'm not convinced that was entirely his decision.

Even considering the fact that we missed on him, Burke/Gobert/Neto was probably the best crop of picks from that draft. The following year we drafted Exum based entirely on potential with the 5th pick & a borderline starting caliber player in Hood with the 23rd pick (if I'm not mistaken).

Obviously it's still way too early to judge the Lyles selection, but in context of our roster (core of Exum, Burks, Hood, Hayward, Favors, Gobert), it made sense to draft a front court player who brings a unique skill set which compliments our other bigs.

Other than prioritizing high character players, the only trend I see is that the FO adjusts it's philosophy according to roster, draft position, & available talent.
