So What Position FA?

Not a bad post but while I'd say there'd be plenty of firepower, there wouldn't be plenty of minutes for all involved.

Beal can (and has) played the "lead guard" or "point guard". When Wall went down he was the primary ball handler.

I don't think getting Beal is realistic, but if we did, there would be enough minutes, IMO, because of the flexibility to take minutes at the 1.

Do you really think he can guard the likes of Durant and Leonard?

Either way-- I'm happy with a Bazemore contract only to a certain extent. ATL will overpay for him, and I dont think we personally should.

No! Nobody can. That is why we need Durant and Kobe not some pedestrian bolt on like Kent. NAOS and Cunning worship the LA Clippers model.

what track record does the current leadership of ATL have for overpaying players?

I've NEVER said that we're looking for a guy to LOCK DOWN the wing FULL-TIME. I'm talking about getting a guy who CAN GUARD THE WING DOWN THE STRETCH OF CLOSE GAMES SO HAYWARD CAN FOCUS ON BUCKETS. Why has the latter been consistently misrecognized as meaning something like the former? I'm not hyping Bazemore as a first-option offensive or defensive player. He's probably better than Burks, though, fit-wise, in both aspects of the game. And, it's realistic to think about acquiring him.

Bazemore is about equal to Hayward when it comes to defending the wing. Some may say he is (or could) surpassing Hayward as a defender. Wouldn't you like to add a wing defender of that caliber to this roster? Don't you also appreciate that he can switch onto guards without a problem?

Easy. If you came out just saying this, I don't think anyone would disagree. But coming in here saying that he can guard big wings deserved the questions that it ended up getting IMO. I'm not sure I've ever seen him lock down Kawhi, Lebron, Melo, Durant, or George on a possession. Maybe he has-- I don't know. In Hawks games I watch it's 90% Sef who gets that assignment, barring momentary switches.

There are dreamier options than Bazemore, but Kent is realistic and fits really well, IMO. Has become pretty clutch, and can defend wings and guards. Coming from ATL, he'd have a seamless transition. The jazz FO had interest in him before he signed with the Hawks, so that's encouraging history, too.

I really like how he can help take the defensive burden off of Hayward -- who, I think, should be given the luxury of drawing an easier defensive assignment down the stretch of close games than he is right now.

bump from page 1.

If Hayward can guard bigger wings, then Bazemore can, too. It isn't a complicated thing to say; statistics bear it out quite plainly.

Sef is an excellent defender. But another reason he's been getting those assignments is because his offense has really struggled at times, so defense has been his only serious contribution. For both reasons, he draws the most difficult assignment while he's on the floor. Bazemore has only had like 0.2 less defensive win shares, or something like that.

Beal is a pipe dream... Playing time would be far down my list of items I'd worry about... Get him and figure it out.

I like Lyles a lot, but I think we are going to regret passing on Devin Booker. Could be the real deal a la Bradley Beal type.

He is going to be JJ reddick on the low end... He makes me sad. Not giving up on lyles and I like him but drafting him created some roster composition issues in the short term. I think the reason we don't get a better 3rdbig is because of lyles. Long term it may be fine but putting Booker on the bench and addressing that glaring need would have really changed things this season.

I think it will work out long-term.

The following statement isn't worth much, but: I was at Vivint for the last Suns-Jazz game, and at the time I had been more on the Booker side of the Booker-Lyles debate. But when I left the game, I felt pretty sure that Lyles would be the better player. Eventually, at least.

I was there too! Yeah Booker didn't look to good in that game. I love Booker, that said, Lyles will be a very good player for us off the bench. Having a big that can shoot in the pick and roll will be huge for our offense. How long has it been since we've had one of those?

You already told this story.

I highly doubt Lindsay will look for a PG, given Exum will be back and Burke is somewhat excelling in the back up/instant offense role and will hopefully continue to improve on his efficiency which has taken a nice leap forward so far this season. Whilst Neto is a good third option for 1m a season.

Shooting Guard/Small forward is a bit more interesting as just like last season there is plenty of potential there with Burks, Hood and Hayward but neither Hood or Burks have really taken there chance so far this season, although they have certainly had some good moments. If Hood continues to play like he has the past five games then I wouldn't worry about strengthening our starting wings (Haywards a lock) in free agency, as there won't be anyone realistically available that would be better than Hood playing at near on 100%. However if Hood reminds to be patchy from here on to the end of the season, then I would give Nicolas Batum a big offer as I personally believe he would be perfect for our style of play. I would possibly look at upgrading Chris Johnson depending on how he does for the remainder of the season. If he can play active defense and shoot the three ball at a decent rate I wouldn't worry about upgrading him but if the past few games were flukes then I would look at James Johnson who can play the 3/4 and although he is an average shooter, he will provide energy, defense and rebounding. Ingles has a place on the team as far as I'm concerned, albeit irregular minutes, if any (dependant on injuries).

For the front court it goes without saying that both Favors and Gobert are locks and there isn't anyone in free agency who we could upgrade them for, hell we would struggle to do it in a trade. So that leaves the back ups, Lyles is starting to show some real promise and hopefully come next season can give us consistent minutes off the bench, as well as improvements in shooting and defense, whilst hopefully with the added experience his playmaking (passing, dribbling) can be an asset to the team. Withey has shown he can be a good back up for Gobert and give us rim protection for the entire game, is also on a fantastic deal (minus the length). Booker I would cut and replace him with Steve Novak who would only ever play when we are in need of instant offense and someone who can knock down a few consecutive threes, would be a cheap signing and a good locker room presence. Lastly there is Tibor who I think will continue to adapt to the NBA game and whilst I doubt he will ever capable of starting a game, i think over time he could become a guy who can come off the bench and get a few baskets, and show the odd rim protection.

Beyond this there is still room for our 2016 first round draft selection, although I think it would be best if we stashed an overseas player for this years draft choice. Then there is about 30m in cap space that can be used on a FA, but other than Batum I can't think of any FA we could target and more importantly land that would be an upgrade on our starting five.

Well long story short, there hasn't been much discussed to convince me that Kent can guard bigger wings. Which is fine-- we need perimeter D too (at least until Dante comes back). Interesting as to what Utah's next move should be.

maybe if I did some kind of Microsoft Paint or photoshop playtime?

Dal, can Hayward guard bigger wings? pls prove it to me. I'll start a new thread if you'd like.

Lyles looked really good last night. If Favors was playing I think we'd look great right now.

I think this offseason a combo guard or wing are what we will need. Think lyles can be our playmaking big. I like the idea of Tyler Johnson... He's like a better version of delonte west without the crazy. I think we could use trey and or Alec to move up in the draft to add another better talent.

After watching CJ and Ingles last night I think we need help in those spots. Those guys are NBA players but I'm not sure I want them as permeneant fixtures in the rotation.

Baze, Tyler Johnson, Courtney lee, Eric Gordon, lance Thomas... If we use trey in a trade then Brandon Jennings, Jeremy Lin, Langston Galloway are really interesting.

I do think Neto needs to be considered a third PG. When Exum is back I don't want him in the rotation.
