George Hill coming to Utah

Yup everything I have read on Hill and seen from his camp makes me like his fit.
- Good 3 point shooter
- Good D
- Team oriented (OK with role changes)
- Does not need the ball in his hands to be effective (flexibility with Hayward/Hood/Exum/Burks)
- Saying the right things (we will see if it holds)

One could argue Hill is better overall too. The one year he's had a high usage, he put up offensive stats on par with Teague, while providing good defense. People undervalue defense so much.

Furthermore, in the playoffs where things actually matter, Hill has been better. Teague is woefully inefficient in the playoffs, despite having a good surrounding cast. For his career he's shooting 40% overall and 31% from 3...yay. Or maybe we should talk about this recent year where against the mighty defense of Kyrie Irving he shot 34% overall, and 38% overall for the playoffs. But hey, he made the all star team once.

Better at taking care of the ball
Better shooting %'s
More of his shots are 3 pointers
More versatile defender

Teague is used more, has the ball in his hands more. Doesn't mean he is better. I'd take Hill, I don't understand the trade for Indy.

Fewer health issues
More versatility
Better length
Better D
Improves wing rotation
Versatility on defense (switching onto 1-2-3)
Higher probability of signing extension, even if Dante is starting at 1
Hayward connection
Better leadership/ attitude

Add the following:

Should be cheaper in an extension
Doesn't rely on athleticism as much. Once Teague loses that first step, he loses much of his value.

Great posts. An argument can be made that Teague is the better player but the fact that Hill is the better fit seems pretty inarguable to me. With Snyder having coached Teague & DL having been involved in drafting Hill, I'm confident the FO office had more than enough information to make the right decision.

As far as the overall reaction to this trade, I'm surprised to see so much negativity. From what I could tell, the majority of the fan base was in favor of re-signing Hayward & seeing what this core could accomplish long-term. Adding Hill makes this much more likely. #12 is certainly a high price to pay but I would be shocked if this was simply a 1 year rental.

This trade may not elevate us to contender status, but it's undoubtedly a move in the right direction. Step #1 was to establish & develop a core group of players. Step #2 is to add veterans to that core. This trade shows a clear commitment to our young players, as well as to competing this season. I fully expect an additional veteran (or 2) to be added via FA or trade.

For the record, I wouldn't make the argument that Teague is the better player. He's certainly the better known commodity, which is clearly influencing some people's reactions, but the gap in their defensive games far outweighs any advantage that Teague may have over Hill offensively.

Yes, it is not guaranteed for more than one year, but let's look at it this way:

If the Hill experiment works, 90% chance we sign him in offseason. If we like him, he likes us, and someone does not dump a crazy offer on a 31 year old PG, we make him a market offer for 2-3 more years.

Better exit optionality: If the Hill experiment does not work, we are only committed for 1 year, then we dump and reload.

On no planet is Hill better player then Teague. That is straight garbage to even mention that. Utah got the worse part of this trade. Hill is a fit for Jazz but they gave up a lottery pick so Atlanta can get something in return for Teague and this allowed Indiana to upgrade at pg by getting Teague. This trade never goes down if it was Hill for Teague straight up. The Jazz foolishly came in and made it all happen.. What a joke of a trade this was. This makes the Jazz Front Office look like morons..

I don't think people have watched Hill. He's basically exactly what we need and the defensive versatility will allow us to do some things.

Also, I think there is a very decent chance we try to extend him this offseason... similar to what we will likely do with Favors. It's the best use of our cap space imo.

Why are his assists numbers so low? Did not really watch Indiana at all last year so wondering why? Also his assists numbers for his career are quite low.

Indiana has to be giving up more. Teague is significantly better than Hill.

The trade hasn't been officially announced so there might be more pieces moving.

I think it was wise to leak it in advance so when the guy drafted at 12 puts on a Jazz hat tonight we don't explode with anger or fall in love.
