What's new

Boris Diaw Traded To Jazz (news, not just proposed trade)

Good move loading up to maximize chances that Gordon stays after a promising playoff run. 2nd round preferably

This right here. ^^^

Plus the financial flexibility to chase a free agent next year if they choose to. Plus, Bird rights on Hayward and Hill.

Last year's starters

Neto/Mack, Hood, Hayward, Favors and Gobert

Next year's starters

Hill (or Exum), Hood, Hayward, Favors and Gobert

Last year's bench

Burke, Neto, Burks (injured), C. Johnson, Jingles, Booker, Lyles (developing) and Withey.

Next year's bench

Exum (or Hill), Mack, Neto, Burks (hopefully healthy), J. Johnson, Jingles, Diaw, Lyles (a year older, stronger and more experienced) and Withey.

Hill, Diaw, Mack and Withey are all in contract years. DL has made a significant improvement in terms of veteran presence, bench scoring and (hopefully) basketball IQ across the board. Hill, Johnson and Diaw are all smart and savvy players. Great quality for a young and developing team.

If nothing else, the upgrades over Trey Burke (George Hill), Chris Johnson (Joe Johnson) and Trevor Booker (Boris Diaw) will help fix a lot of problems.

Damn we gave up Hanlan's rights? I'm not complaining or anything, but he actually looked like a competent player last night. Spurs must have liked him a bit. Spurs could actually use Hanlan.

Does Diaw's french connection make both him and Gobert happier? Always good to have a countryman.

It's interesting that the Jazz have done that. Was it accidental or by design?

Exum -> has Ingles as friend
Gobert -> has Diaw as friend

going farther...

Hayward -> has Hill as friend (I think I read that they were friends, right?)

maybe next step is to sign someone that's good friends with Favors.

I think the Diaw trade has two goals. A mentor for Lyles, and getting Rudy to sign for a little less than the max. Sneaky DL.

Rudy isnt taking less money because Diaw is with him. We got him because we have cap room and he is a far better player than Joel Bolomboy.

I think only Ingles was brought in because of the ties to Exum. Everyone else was just basketball reasons.

What were the main issues with last year's team?

1. Depth
2. Shooting
3. Experience

The Jazz addressed these EXTREMELY well the last week or so.

1. Depth will not be an issue this year. This might be the deepest Jazz team ever.

Gobert/Diaw/Withey
Favors/Lyles
Hayward/Johnson/Ingles
Hood/Burks/Mack
Hill/Exum/Neto

Adding Hill, Johnson, and Diaw plus getting back Exum and Burks will be huge for depth. If everyone is healthy, 3 main guys from last years team will not see the floor (Mack, Neto, and Ingles). Even Withey played big minutes at times. Those guys are now our 3rd stringers and, if everything goes well, will not see the floor this season.

2. Shooting

Hill - career 38% 3pt shooter
Johnson - Career 34% 3pt shooter
Diaw - career 34% 3pt shooter

All 3 guys are threats from deep.

3. Experience

The Jazz are no longer the youngest/least experienced team in the NBA. Last years roster had played in a combined 42 playoff games.

Diaw - 108
Johnson - 101
Hill - 75

These guys have tons of playoff experience that will help this young core.

Good work Dennis Lindsay! Take the rest of the summer off.
