Boris Diaw Traded To Jazz (news, not just proposed trade)

Yep. This in a nutshell. Getting to the salary floor by adding a veteran player who won't jack up future financial flexibility. Adds depth, without a huge commitment. Fits well with what the Jazz do. Considering how Jingles has done for Quin, I expect Diaw to play just fine for Utah. Cheaper than Trevor Booker. Jazz saved $3.5 million if they keep him both years, but can trade or dump him next year for no cost.

Also provides a reasonable asset (non-guaranteed salary) if they need to match salary for a trade at the deadline. Jazz have assets to use AND the ability to go up to about $20 million in matching salary with only sending out Diaw and Johnson if something good comes available.

Not the biggest Diaw fan but certainly won't complain about the move. A definite upgrade over Withey or Booker as our 4th big.

All in all, a solid few weeks for DL and the rest of our front office. Hill, Johnson and Diaw should really help fill out the problem areas in our rotation.

I'm not doing handstands over this move. Diaw is a guy who was unmotivated by Gregg Popovich and was unmotivated by being on a great team. He was constantly out of shape and was repeatedly benched. What kind of influence is that for a young team? I am also not a fan of the fit. The Diaw trade means that we've likely seen the end of either Withey or Pleiss in a Jazz uniform, and whichever one stays won't be in the rotation. That leaves Rudy as the only true center on the roster again and we witnessed how bad the team struggled when Rudy got hurt last year and we were stuck with undersized players at the 4 and 5 for the bulk of the game.

The plus side is that we didn't give up much in this deal, but an unmotivated player who's constantly overweight doesn't excite me.

And next year it's non-guaranteed. So, they can move him for an asset to a team that needs cap space, cut him to create their own space, trade him for a replacement asset if he can get them anything or keep him if he fits well with the team. Jazz needed to upgrade Booker. This feels like that to me.

This is a good point. We have two 1st rounders next season. if we draft a Diaw replacement we can easily move him - especially as a trade sweetner in a larger deal. If not, we have some depth - we got Diaw for almost nothing - for a PG who likely would never play regular season minutes for us. Also with the way Diaw plays he's going to hit a lot of guys cutting to the hoop. Our 2nd unit is so much better this season. That's what DL needed to address and he did....

Only true center on the roster? You forget we have a 7' Jeff Withey and a 7'3 Tibor Pleiss? HOw does the Diaw trade signal the end of Withey/Pleiss? Last time I checked they are both under contract. It's not like we need to cut anyone to save money.

He's been the same player for the last 4 years. You know what you're going to get out of him.

1. Depth will not be an issue this year. This might be the deepest Jazz team ever.

Gobert/Diaw/Withey
Favors/Lyles
Hayward/Johnson/Ingles
Hood/Burks/Mack
Hill/Exum/Neto

Adding Hill, Johnson, and Diaw plus getting back Exum and Burks will be huge for depth. If everyone is healthy, 3 main guys from last years team will not see the floor (Mack, Neto, and Ingles). Even Withey played big minutes at times. Those guys are now our 3rd stringers and, if everything goes well, will not see the floor this season.

I actually hope Ingles still sees regular minutes (not heavy, maybe ~10 a game). He is still a very good three point shooter, the problem last year was he had to do a lot more due to injuries/lack of depth. Now we can use him as a strictly spot up shooter, which I think could be very valuable.

I want him to go to p3... Just want to see the athletic testing results and see if I can beat it.

I like this move... We are so much deeper. I think we need to cut Johnson and move off of tibors deal if possible. I think we should use those spots for developing players. If we move Mack could open up another spot but I wouldn't move him for nothing.
