Speed up the Pace?

It appears that in Jazz practice today they are running with a 12 second clock. Is that a gimmick to simulate game pressure, or are the Jazz going to be more uptempo? Obviously, with the new additions shooting and passing will increase dramatically and with a veteran presence, the decision making process will be better. They could definitely afford to run at a higher pace.

Does that conflict with a stifling defense? If you give the other teams more opportunities on offense, your defense will suffer. Fortunately, the bench has improved immensely so there will be more fresh and capable bodies to throw at the opposition, probably more than what most other teams would be able to match.

The one downside with the terrific defense the Jazz play when healthy is that it doesn't often lead to fast breaks on the other end. The Jazz don't really gamble on the steal and release on the cherry pick. The get solid position and force bad shots. I have a hard time seeing the jazz hold the other team to a shot clock violation than rushing to the other end and jacking a shot in 12 seconds.

How is this going to work?

Pace has no correlation to offensive or defensive efficiency. It doesn't help you unless it caters to your personnel. Our best chance at winning is to beat teams in the half court as long as we have Favors and Gobert. That might change when one of them subs out, but it only makes sense to force the other team to play against them while they're in. We need to do what we've been doing with more efficiency and execution.

For example, our offense needs to find shots more quickly, but it should still be centered around moving the ball. The defense is great, but we need to do a better job at defensive rebounds and turnovers into baskets the other way. Those are things that can take this team to the next level. I don't expect the Jazz be last in pace again, but also I don't think that comes from a major change in philosophy.

For my thoughts ,not if you have two PG's that can come in and affect the point of attack .Jazz will play attack defense than sit back and let the great Pg's do what they want and why not ,they just might have the best rim protector in the world behind them.

Remembering what the Jazz did when they inserted Gobert and Exum into the starting lineup led to a phenomenal defense and you have 6 of the players of the core 8 back and none is older than 26 years old ,but two years wiser and stronger. This with George Hill joining this defense too.

We have youth and depth

We have playmaker wings and finally a legit pg

We are long and agile

Pushing the pace will keep the opponent on the defensive all game without the ability to break down our defense in order to respond in kind. I honestly believe that we have the personnel to have our cake and eat it too.

It's finally baked! I have been really looking forward to tasting it!

You mean we finally went out and made a trade/were active in FA?

It should have been the year before but at least it happened and we are no longer talking about 1 more year. Now to make this team a long term winner. Build towards that Championship!!

we'll be able to play effectively at multiple rates/paces. That diversity is an incredible weapon.

Yeah, that is what I am thinking. Just pick the pace that the other team doesn't want to play at. Still have a hard time letting go of the fact that we are just about undefeated when holding the opposition under 90 points. Most teams don't want to play at a grinding pace.

The Martial Arts always provides my favorite sports metaphors. The jazz should have quick knockout punches (fast pace tactics), and gruesome submission poses (Favors-Gobert).

Or, the bullpen analogy offered by Lindsey: we have fastball pitchers and grind-it-out-deep-into-the-count pitchers with lots of junk.

The historic 73-9 Warriors struggled at times when the game slowed down. They were best in 4th and 5th gears and always looking to get to that pace. At their best, the jazz should be able to set uncomfortable paces, whatever that may be at the moment. Incredible luxury.
