Get DVR to Record Games

Ok, help me out. Had TiVo up until Friday and with it I would create a wishlist for "Jazz" and select a topic of basketball. I would update the channel list to exclude channels I didn't have (like NBA TV or NBA LP) and it would wonderfully record Jazz games on whatever channel it came on. Root. ABC (haha, I know). TNT. Whatever. Worked.

Now I have Dish and the Hopper3. I searched for Jazz and it suggested Utah Jazz under sports. Nice big button to record all games. Sweet right? Nope. It chose to record the game on an NBA League Pass channel, not Root. I don't see a way to tell this thing that I don't have league pass. Looked at Tuesday and I think it is planning to do it again. I don't want to update the recording for every game but it's looking like I need to in order to get the right channel.

Someone has to have solved this and I'm an idiot...?

Wish I had an answer. Same thing happened for me. It recorded the NBA TV Broadcast instead of the root sports one. Problem is the NBA TV broadcast was blacked out in our area because the game was shown on root. Now I can't watch the game and can't figure out how to tell it not to again. FWIW I have comcast and not Dish.
.
I can't figure out why it didn't just record both of them. Never used DVR for Jazz games before because I didn't have time to go back and watch them if I couldn't live.

You shouldn't have thrown out your VCR

The big thing that I ran into wth Dish, was that Root sports wasn't a consistent channel, so I would have to manually search out the Jazz games myself to set the DVR. In the two years that we had Dish, I was never was able to setup an automatic recording that would work correctly to record the Jazz season.
After switching to Direct TV, Root sports is always channel 683-1 for Jazz games (at least here in the Boise area), making it easy for the DVR to do as your TiVo did. I have my DVR setup to record the Jazz season, and it automatically finds the correct channel to record the game from, from the channels that I have. So far through preseason and the first three games it's worked well.
I know, not much help with the Dish situation, but maybe a call to customer service may help.

Yeah, I have had to manually find and record the games. It sucks because sometimes when I am travelling without internet I have to rely on the misses. It's not a priority to her and so I have missed big games. Also, the app is hit and miss. You push record and it doesn't always actually do it. Then there is worst part that there is no second chance. No ESPN3 to watch root sports. No Root Sports replay of the game. Comcast replays the game right after the game... Dish cuts off the service about 60 minutes after the game.

This is all making me sad... thanks for sharing that I'm (1) not a big idiot for not being able to figure it out and (2) that there is no solution :(

I will never trust the DVR to record the right channel so I always manually record every game. That way I know for sure it will work every time. I do have a Tivo now though, so maybe I'll try your exclude channels trick :)

I just moved to the Boise area last week!

I have league pass. I set my Dish hopper to record every Jazz game by searching the game app (forget the app name) by team name. So far it has recorded every game correctly, but because I have LP, it has been recording on the LP channels, which I want it to do. Since the LP NBA subchannels are sorted by team name, it has been recording the home HD feed. So far so good for me, but I can see how this would be an issue for someone without LP.

Is there any way to remove non-subscribed channels from the guide/search? I could do that on DirecTv...

I've got a Tivo and it was easy to set up to record everything that has keyword "Jazz", that falls within the sports/basketball category. At least, I think that's how I set it up. However it was, it wasn't too hard.

Yeah I haven't found that if it exists.

The game finder app is fine to find games live but I haven't seen a way to use that once now and have it record all games. Seems like a huge gap with Dish. Oh well. Guess checking manually every few days is my solution.

Thanks y'all.

There has to be a way. I searched and recorded all "Jazz" games. When I go to my DVR, it crosses out all the duplicate listings and only records the NBALP channel (I have LP). There has to be a way to set it to record specific channels. I also get notifications on my phone though the Dish Anywhere app reminding me of upcoming Jazz games too, so I can check and make sure it is recording on the right channel. If Dish wasn't so much cheaper I'd get DirecTV. But with Dish, they make it so easy to get $50 off a month through referrals I can't justify switching.
