Kevin Pelton Thinks George Hill Will Get $20 Million in FA

gais, it really sucks having lots of talent, amiright?? let's blow this **** up.

This cake is great... let's throw it in the blender and rebake it.

Names?

Also can those guys play great defense and switch between both guard positions... what about intangibles, experience, and will they come here.

Also which one of those guys can we use our current cap space to extend and get a discount on in future years?

Extend him if possible. Figure out the other stuff later.
No extending him after his best stretch of his career at age 30 is a bad move.

let me just say now that all of your questions will stump him. Hard.

He was a good player before that stretch and will continue to be good. Not using our current cap space would be the worst decision. Extending favors would ensure that we lose Hill because his salary next year would double.

Also, do we feel his play drops off significantly? Sometimes having a 30 year old on the team is a good thing.

Also I missed all of those names that can replace him for less than 20M?

2017 is loaded with PGs, we could draft one.

We could sign a guy like Patty Mills or Dwill to be Exum's backup.

My plan would be to be let Hill hit FA and negotiate. If we can't get a good price then go after Mills or Dwill to backup Exum. Hell we still have this guy named Burks who can play as a backup PG. I'd also look at Lonzo Ball in the draft.

Exum replaces him along with Burks, backup PG signee or drafted player.

So the solution to replacing a veteran to solidify our backcourt is to add a pg to develop? We will be drafting in the 20s and they will likely be a dime a dozen at that point.

Mills, dwill???? How much, how long for the contracts. Would be a clear downgrade on offense and defense. I'd rather move Burks for no salary and pay Hill. Whatever we gave mills and Williams plus Burks salary is likely close to 20M per season... and I think we are worse off.

Duh it's a downgrade. You can't have 8 amazing players on a roster unless you are willing to pay insane luxury tax dollars. That would be amazing if Miller is willing, but I doubt it. You have to downgrade somewhere and PG is the logical choice as it's the least important position on the team and the position where our highest potential player plays (Exum).

I'm not suggesting the guy we draft becomes our backup, but he would be a backup in training. Mills or Dwill would ideally sign for 2-3 years. They are both very good rotation players behind Exum. Mills would obviously be great for chemistry also as he already has a great relationship with Ingles/Exum. D-Will would be more of a question mark because he seems like a cranky old dude (but would be my top choice if the $$$ is right). Hell both those guys might be too expensive and we might just have to settle for Neto or Mack again. It doesnt really matter because I truly believe Dante is going to be ready to play at a high level for 33 mpg next year as our starting PG.

I dont get the want to move Burks when he is on a great contract and can realistically be the difference in us being a contender or not. Not many teams will have a 15 ppg player on a non-rookie contract coming off the bench. I think we have to be really smart with how we spend our $$$. We have enough draft picks to where if we can draft well we should be able to constantly have high talent players on cheap contracts without having to break the bank to compliment our core.

Sure, just liked we drafted this future superstar PG at #5 a couple of seasons ago. Potential is just that...potential that can go either way, or not develop much at all. The Jazz take a huge step back if Hill leaves. Yes, they've done well without him this trip. They've played some bad teams, though (and lost to the one good one). But how quickly we forget Hill saving us the first few weeks; Jazz could have easily won just 1 game to start the season and lost all the rest.

There was also a comment by the Heat announcers that Hayward was "ecstatic" about the trade for Hill. Not sure if that info is correct, but if so, an extension for Hill might mean a much better chance of keeping Gordon.

At some point in this iteration of the Jazz they have to start value hunting for players instead of just getting all the best players possible. They probably won't have the luxury of being a multi-championship team where players take discounts to stay most likely, so it will be tough.

I'm not forgetting anything. I'm just not over-reacting and calling to extend a guy after the best week stretch of his career, especially when they have better players they need to re-sign (Favors/Hood/Exum/Hayward). Hill is great, and I get why people love him, because last year they played with Neto, Burke, and Mack as our PG's. I think you putting any above average PG in here and they are going to look good with how much talent we have. I think Exum is going to start looking very good by the end of the year.

Lets see how far Hill takes us this year...

Exactly. No point in extending him if the asking price is 20,000,000. Plus, if that is the actual number that is agent is hearing, why wouldn't he want to hit FA and have a bidding war for his services? This dude has never had a big contract in his career and he is going to turn 31 this year. If San Antonio and Utah both wanted me, I would just let them bid their hearts out and go to the highest bidder. Both teams are great organizations that he is familiar with and both look to contend for titles.

The assumption people are making is that he wants an extension because he said so in the media. A player saying "Nah, I dont want to extend" would be a PR mistake as a fan base would take it as "He doesnt want to be here" and freak out which is basically what happened when D-Will was here.

I dont think George Hill is critical to our success. I think having good PG's (or specifically, guys who are starter level and not Mack/Neto) is critical to our success. There are other good PG's in the NBA that won't cost $20 million. Unless he wants to take a pretty hefty discount to extend, there is no reason to extend him.

Then name like 3-4 candidates that you can think of, so your claim gains a little bit of substance

The point is he's eligible for an extension and can take 10M this year and a discount on the backend and never hit FA. Even if we paid 15% too much we'd still be okay and have much less uncertainty.

We are trying to retain Hayward too. Lose Hayward and all the plan Bs suck. If we have Hill already signed and have only one free agent to negotiate with I'd feel much better. Let Hill go out to bid while you are negotiating with Hayward would be a mistake.

I'm thrilled with Dante but he's got a few years to go in his developing a great feel for the game. Having Hill here helps that... does not hurt that.
