What's new

My faith in Exum has been broken

sure he shows flashes. almost every player shows flashes at some point. but lets be frank here, in a league where the average player tenure is somewhere around 4.5 years, being one of the worst guards in the league a few years in a row wouldn't bode well for most players not in exum's coddled situation. he's lucky he has a patient front office backing him, lets put it that way.
Few years in a row...

He has played one and a quarter season.

Like, no one has ever invested in young players and given them more than 1.25 year before cutting the cord when they arent good right away.

Anthony bennett begs to differ. Anyway, most first rounders dont end up being second worst in their position group either even in their rookie seasons, so its not an easy comparison to make. Take draft position out of the equation. If he was an undrafted player trying to stick playing how he has, he likely wouldnt.

So if he had the same talent level and was undrafted? They would still keep him because he would be that much cheaper. The talent is clear and apparent. They arent going to cut ties with that on his rookie contract, no way in hell. Draft position doesnt matter.

Draft position absolutely matters in how much patience the staff will show in a players development. No doubt.

There are plenty of undrafted/dleague players that are long, lean, quick, and not effective. They arent sticking in the league, and thus far Exum is exactly that description.

They arent as talented....

It doesnt though, you just contradicted yourself by bringing up Bennett.
And you said teams don't give up on terrible players after 1 season. What's your point? If bennett was undrafted he wouldnt have made it past the 10 day contract.

I said teams dont give up on talented players regardless of draft position. Bennett isnt talented.

Humor me... What exactly is Exum's elite talent?

I never said he was elite. Good lord do you just pretend to read post before you hit reply? Exum has talent, read the thread, we have been discussing it.

Is what you said. And anthony bennett has as much talent as exum does. His game certainly didnt translate to the nba.

I think if Dante Exum were a shooting guard, he'd be playing in Europe or D-League (permanently). But since he is uniquely big and long (and has speed) for a PG, teams will be more patient with their development. Anthony Bennett is a bad example because he was small for a power forward and there was nothing athletically or physically overwhelming about him that made him valuable to any NBA team. He was just a flat out terrible pick by the Cavs, biggest bust for a #1 pick in my lifetime.

Exum is a pg that cant dribble, cant shoot unless set and wide open, and even though hes big, cant finish very well and doesnt see the ft line much. His speed has gone unused and unnoticed because he can barely dribble, and hes been pretty average defensively this year. He has the tools to be good someday. Lots of players have the tools and never put it together though.

Every player in the nba has talent. Many of them are out of the league in 4 or less years.
