Jazz @ Mavericks Game Thread 6:30 MT 2/9/17

I think if Gobert had sustained a season ending injury this offseason, the team would be competing with the other baddies for the 8th spot.

Gee some overreacting comments here ! bad loss, it happens, it reminds the players and the coach that nothing is ever in control, it reminds them not to get cocky, it reminds Gobert that he is great but can get exposed on D too, it reminds the team that having Gobert to cover your defense as a gigantic safety is great but if you leave him hanging he will get exposed and foul and then you are in the doodoo. Basically having has those lapses now is a lot better than having them in a playoff game !

Still shocked that they didn't run a basic press break to end the game. That to me is egregious. Every high school team is taught how to get the ball across mid court against an aggressive full court press. Jazz seemed surprised that the Mavs would defend them that way. Horrible decision to get the ball to Burks on that. If it ends up in the hands of ANY of Hayward, Jingles, JJ or even Diaw, I have to believe that they make a better decision than Burks did. Should have been Jingles in bounding to either Hayward or JJ with Burks flashing to mid court. Get the ball in, and then strait back to the inbound passer with multiple guys at different levels. Basically, they handed the Mavs the game by playing that like they did. All the other stuff aside, they had the game won if they executed that press break with even a minimal amount of competency.

So.... bad loss.

Bad loss in the sense that we can't take much away from it... Gobert will learn from his mistake but I'm kind of disappointment Quin didn't stick with Dante, I would have loved to see him get a chance down the stretch, I think it would have been great for his development even if it somehow cost us the game.

btw I thought the writing was on the wall after those 3 Alley oops and we got a bit too smiley, bit too jokey and lost focus. We are a talented side but we aren't good enough to just flip the switch on and off.

Some of the line ups tonight were trash. I'd have liked to have seen Dante and AB start and really push the pace.

Anyway, on to the next one.

Do we overrate Favors? All I read and see tells me that we have elite defense and chemistry when Gobert is on the floor. When he isn't, we suck defensively. If Favors is such an athletic defending big like we sell him to be, why do we struggle so much when he's our anchor?

We probably saw different games, because Dante was looking lost of defense and offense.. had his head in the clouds.. had some inexcusable turnovers.. His only saving grace was that he had more length than Shelvin Mack and that isn't saying much. Also, he still looks like there is a ball and chain around his ankle when he lays up..

Whenever Exum tries to push the pace, he is sloppy and has very little control..
Quite honestly, I'd rather see Dante go to the D league for an extended period of time and have Neto play instead.

Gotta give Carlisle a lot of credit. Up 4 with 19 seconds The Jazz obviously thought Dallas would foul immediately; but without a true PG inbounding from backcourt they were vulnerable and he recognized that.

I've chilled out a lot over the years where I rarely, if ever, swear at the game but last night was something else. That filter shattered into about a million pieces. The moment the Jazz went up 20 and we're having fun it seemed their focus wavered a little and when some calls went against them it crumbled. I thought this was a lesson learned last season. It doesn't happen as frequently as last year but I hope this serves as a reminder that focus has to be there for 48 minutes. Especially this late in the season and going into the playoffs. ASB can't get here soon enough, imo. Hopefully it re-energozes the players and allows them to really dig their heels in to finish the regular season strong.

These are the types of situations that scare me in the playoffs. Complete melt downs.

I think with Hill out there we win this game, but it still worries me.

So close to a 3-0 awesome road trip. Grrrrrrrr!

What, so he isn't given 1 game where he is allowed to play through his mistakes??? Yet I get to watch Diaw, Favors, Mack and Lyles **** the bed out there on a nightly basis.

After seeing his minutes mapping GH's early, I was hoping for a close game to see if Quin would keep him in down the stretch and IMO if you've decided to "rest" GH it was the perfect opportunity. Bottom line, Dante won't jeopardize the result of the game any more than a Diaw, Lyles or our current version of Favors.

Man the jazz sucked in ot.
Hayward went cold (but otherwise was fantastic), jj couldn't make a shot and took a bunch of hero ball out of the offense shots (even an air ball iirc), diaw made some horrible passes for turnovers that gave Dallas easy brakeaway layups, mack sucked, favors did nothing, burks and Dante were hanging out in the doghouse, lyles played 7 minutes total without attempting a shot, gobert was fouled out on the bench.
Overtime was a complete disastrous carry over from the 4th quarter.

**** that game. On to the next one.
