Tony Jones: Favors and Jazz unlikely to reach an agreement on renegotiation and extension

I doubt the Jazz want to pay him 18 million a year. If I had to guess they were offering more like 12-14 a year. I wouldn't give Favors 18. Bigs are not easy to trade right now, even good ones.

Mh, I think Favors versatility to play both big positions, commitment to smart play, defense, switch and extend his range/skill level make him worth at least 18. If he's more or less healthy next year that's what I expect him to command at least in free agency.

Tbh I would've thought that Favors personality and health situation would have made him a good candidate for a renegotiation. Let's say 18-20 per year, because players who are better defensively and don't shoot 3s always get shorted in combination with health issues.

I was hoping for something like... 22+20+14+14 for Favors. I guess it's hard to gauge what a good contract for him would be with his injury concerns.

Jazz are probably low-balling the hell out of Favors in negotiations.

He already extended once on a deal that dollar for production was one of the best in the NBA up until this year. The Stockton/Hornacek days are long gone - starting players always believe they can get better.

I don't blame him at all for waiting it out.

The whole point of using this money now is that this is money we can afford now and money we cannot afford in the future. If you want to sign Hill in the summer, it's much better to give him 14M now in exchange for a discount in the future years, making our cap situation more manageable for the next several years.

I would actually see if we could pony up the full 13 M this year and max out Hill for the next three years. Move Burks in the offseason... maybe Favs. I think Hill is worth the money but the years scare me.

When you are offering an extension you are hoping for value, not offering his straight value. Discount for injuries and discount for positional depth (the league is saturated with bigs right now). Not saying Favors isnt a special player when he is healthy with his defensive versatility, but not many teams want to play his style of player at 4 and a lot of teams already had a high paid good starting 5 or young and promising starting 5. Very few teams need a big man. That is why you saw a dude like Nerlens Noel go for two second rounders (part of the reason at least).

Nah, you are definitely whiny. He left cap-space open hoping he could get an extension done and it didnt happen. The Jazz made trade offers involving 1st round picks (according to Locke) and it didnt work out. DL isn't a fortune teller, he can't full predict the future to know how to spend every dollar as efficiently as possible.

Super big risk for him tho. If he has another injury plagued season next year (specifically the same injury issues) he might not see a lot of value on the market. The FA dollars are shrinking as top tier players get paid a larger % of the cap and money for bigs is more scarce with teams shifting towards valuing wings and rise of young big men in the NBA.

His agent legitimately ****ed up last time (that or Favors just really wanted to get an extension done cuz he really liked Utah) when it came to forecasting the FA market.

Hill made clear he didn't want to negotiate an extension when we traded for him. And signing Favors to an extension now kills the teams flexibility moving forward. It basically locks the Jazz into this current team after Hayward and Hill re-sign. By summer 2018 we would be way over the cap. By waiting the Jazz give themselves about a year to decide if there's a different path that is better for the team.

Not a fortune teller but if you mismanage an asset two or three years in a row... including misreading the market on the Hayward extension negotiations. It shows he has some warts. I think he's done a ton of good and I'm happy he's our GM. I'm not going to use hindsight and judge his drafting like some do, but if I think he made mistakes I won't hesitate to discuss them.

My complaint is that he gave up picks and $ to free up even more capspace and it seems like he did it without having much of an agreement with either Favors or Hill. He didn't even need it for renegotiating and extending Favors. The only reason to give those 2 picks and money was if he was going to R&E Hill.
