Favors reminds me of Shaq

The Thriller

Well-Known Member
I have heard a few times during Jazz games comparisons to Malone. On the board I've read comparisons to Dwight Howard. But honestly, with his length, strength, and pretty refined post game, he reminds me of a young Shaq. That post up against the Hornets last night where he spun baseline and threw it down with one hand was extremely reminiscent of Shaq.

Here's a sweet highlight video of Shaq's rookie year.

Thoughts?

Not saying he'll have anything close to the career that Shaq's had, but perhaps the potential is there?

Does this means he gets, fat, slow, oft injured and can't shoot free throws?

He already can't shoot free throws.

If after nearly 2 decades of dominance and 4 NBA titles he can become fat, slow, and oft injured as much as he likes.

How's Andrei's career going?

I was actually thinking Yao Ming but to each their own.

Disagree on the Shaq comparison - Shaq was 7-1. Even if Shaq hadn't bulked up - even if they both possess similar athleticism there's a huge, huge difference between 7-1 and 6-10 in the NBA.

I think Favors is pretty close to a rookie-Dwight Howard- the Dwight Howard fresh out of high school before he built his body up. Favors isn't quite as springy or uber-athletic as Dwight (then again - who is? Howard's a freak), but I think his jumper and touch around the rim is a little more advanced than Dwight's in 2004-05.

I don't think that Favors has a "pretty refined post game" yet. I see alot of potential there, and I really liked his footwork against LaMarcus Aldrige last week when he scored on a reverse layup after facing up and driving - and last night's dunk was nice to but don't forget it came against Marco Bellineli on a mismatch in the post.

Ultimately it will come down to how much Favors is willing to work on his game, but he has all the tools to be an all-star in the future.

Combo of Shaq/Dwight/Yao???

DAYUM!!!

Seriously though I see a little of Dwight in his game, but Shaq dominated from the get go. I don't see Favors reaching anywhere close to what Shaq was able to do. Also Derrick's free throws should be A LOT better than Shaq's as time goes on. I think he actually has very nice form and there's no reason he shouldn't be around 70%, we all know how Shaq's form is.

Favors has a lot better footwork and post up game than Dwight Howard had as a rookie. Dwight just barely started developing moves this year.

Statistically & size wise he is pretty close to what Amare was his rookie year

Not as aggressive as Shaq. Shorter, as someone already pointed out. Favors certainly has tons of talent. What becomes of it all is still something to be optimistic about. I bet his +/- is really good because it seems like, regardless of stats, it seems like the Jazz do better on both end of the floor when he's in the game.

But to get back on topic - I can see how you might see rookie shaq in him 'cause they're both dunking the ball but other than that I'm really seeing shaq.

someone mentioned Tarpley a few weeks ago and I thought that was maybe a little more accurate. It's been a few years since watching Tarpley but it seemed there was something there. But maybe that was just because Tarpley played in a time when players didn't look all roided out, and Favors is still young so he hasn't spent years lifting the weights bulking up. In today's game, and on the Jazz, I expect Favors to bulk up and look less like Tarpley and -- INSIGHT -- I just thought of something. Maybe he's a mix of Tarpley and Amare. ? I dunno. But not shaq.

Consider Amare received 1000+ more minutes of development time his rookie season as well and was a year older and I actually think those numbers look good for Favors (although the foul rate is troublesome).

Favors has actually come the longest way among all NBA rookies this season. He had some games in summer league where he looked totally hapless.

Anyone else remember this: https://www.nba.com/summerleague/games/20100708/UTANJN/gameinfo.html

6 points, 7 turnovers, 5 fouls. Ouch.

Dude, you're a moran. He plays nothing like Shaq.

Repped- And agreed! Its just nice to have a collection of bigs, that all have some potential to compete with anyteam in the league. And I hope Utah signs Fez to be the 4-5 big incase of injury. YOu can't teach size

Andre is neither fat nor slow. Comparison moot.

Oh but he does suck though.

If he could be what Tarpley would have been without all the off court issues that would be fantastic.
