It is an absolute disgrace that a team like the Indiana Pacers, who finished at 37-45 (actually WORSE than the Jazz) makes the playoffs when there are teams in the NBA that don't make the playoffs with winning records. Case in point: the Houston Rockets, who finished 43-39 and didn't make the playoffs when they finished with a better record than three teams that made the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. They also beat the Pacers in both match ups this season. How exactly do the Pacers deserve to make the playoffs when the Rockets don't? If anyone can answer this question, they are a smarter man than I. How I would solve said problem? Give the last playoff spot to the team that finishes with the best record overall in the league among the last 15 teams. Also make it a rule that a team has to finish with at least a .500 record or better to make it to the playoffs in their conference if there are .500 or better record teams in the other conference that don't qualify for the playoffs. In my proposal, the Houston Rockets (43-39) would replace the Indiana Pacers (37-45) in the Eastern Conference 8th and final playoff spot. The same would happen if the 9th place team in the East had a better record than the 8th place team in the West.

No. Simply replace the Pacers with Rockets in the last Eastern Conference Playoff spot. I would also change the first round of the playoffs back to 5 games. This would eliminate any travel problems that could arise, as the teams involved would only have to possibly travel cross country twice, instead of the three times that they do right now.
 
This would also not be an unprecedented rule, as Major League Soccer does the exact same thing. Think of the last playoff spot as being like a Wild Card.
 
Boy, that would be fun. Flying all over the country every other night.

What needs to happen is the NBA needs to extend the season by a month to give teams more rest.
 
Why is the sixteenth team in the playoffs all that important? Win your division, you're in the playoffs. Pretty simple.
 
My mind isn't made up, but I think I'm inclined to agree with the original poster in this thread; I'd like to see a wild card playoff spot.

I don't know if it's worth mentioning, but this year, Indiana is a good team that deserves to be in the playoffs.... Well, I don't know if "deserves" is the right word, when looking at their record. But they are good enough (right now) to belong in the playoffs. A lot of stuff went down in Indiana this year, and the bottom line is, they have a winning record since replacing their head coach. The first half of the season, they were bad. In the second half of the season, they were a winning team. It's not completely fair to lament their presence in the playoffs like they're a lousy team. They're better than their record. So I'm not really upset with the results this year --

But in principle I believe I agree with the idea of an NBA wild card playoff spot.
 
Everyone in the West would be dying to get the 6th-8th seed then because it would mean going into the easier Eastern bracket.
 
I think the OP proposes a TERRIBLE idea. This would completely defeat the purpose of having two conferences. The way it is now, Is the way it needs to be forever. In the NFL last year, The Seahawks made the playoffs with a 7-9 record, But they won the NFC West. Its as simple as, win your division and your in. You cant have a team play in the West all year and allow them to play through the playoffs as an Eastern team.
 
I think they just need to contract the playoffs to 4-6 teams per conference and go with 5 game series for all of them. This 2 month+ playoff system for the NBA is a joke.

It would be a little better with the current system if every series played every other day instead of waiting 3-5 days between games sometimes.
 
The DLeague has the best records in the playoffs and it doesn't matter what conference they are in. It could be done.
 
So conceivably under your plan you could have a 1st round 1 vs 8 matchup of Sacramento vs Miami or Boston/LA ? Playing a 7 game series? Wouldn't that be a big disadvantage for the top seed having to fly cross country over and over in the 1st round?
 
This is really what some people worry about? The ninth worst team in a conference not making the playoffs is not keeping me up at night.

I agree that it's not broke. Bottom seeds are usually just road kill for the top teams on the road to the title anyway.
 
I have no problem with the East and West thing. I don't see a better way of doing it given the uneven schedules played in the NBA.
