Off-season Targets

This is a big idea, but its May so bear with me...

Clippers get Melo

Knicks get Hood, Lyles, Favors, Diaw, Jazz 2017 pick, GS 2017 pick, a number of 2nd round picks, and picks from the Clippers.

Jazz get Porzingis, Jamal Crawford, Noah and Wesley Johnson

Why for Clippers - Melo added to their big 3 might make them a contender. They cant get him without help because they don't have a first round pick and don't have cap space.

Why for NY - its currently a dumpster fire. Losing Porzingis would sting, but get 2+ first rounders, promising Hood, Favors, nonguaranteed contract Diaw, and young Lyles. Most importantly, they clear off $60 million in contracts over the next 2 years and Noah's third year. They rebuild.

Why for us - Porzingis next to Gobert and Hayward is worth losing all that and taking Noah's contract. Crawford is another bad contract, but its only two years. We can weather the storm and he can actually help a la JJ. You gotta spend big if you want another potential star.

Jackson wants a quicker return on what he's doing in NY. He has nothing to show for his time there and putting things on hold for another 5 years wouldn't be in the forecast. He could be demented before they get back in the playoffs.

I think we're setting our sights too low. We're a legit 4th possibly 3rd seed next year. And the way Quin is coaching and how Joe Johnson was able to flourish in our system I suspect we will be able to attract quite a few big names FAs.

Such as?

True. However, the Knick fans would understand a rebuild. Losing Melo would sting, but they have almost zero interested trade partners for him and that contract. They would have a clean slate with a ton of money and rookie contract guys (Hood, Lyles, 2 firsts, and their own rookie contract guys).

You never know, maybe NY could pursue Curry. Imagine that... Nobody wants to come there now because Melo. A new day for the Knicks.

Taking a quick calculation, if we assume we renounce everyone not named Hayward, Hill and Ingles, and assume we waive Diaw, then with cap holds we're sitting at $99-$100M.

I think:

CP3
Holiday
Lowry

These are legit possible FA targets to plug holes at the PG position.

I think Paul George is somebody we should also really look at very hard if we strike out on all those point guards. (or maybe look at him BEFORE targeting those PGs). He seems to be the guy that likes the ball in his hands, rather than playing next to a ball dominant PG. As an example I don't think he liked playing with Teague very much this year, his numbers haven't improved.

Quin's system is geared towards dominant wings and a Paul George + Gordon Hayward combo could really do damage IMO.

Jazz will need to sign their own (Hayward, Hill and Jingles), hit on the value free agents (ala Joe Jesus) and then win again in the trade market (Hill and Diaw). Last year, DL needed veteran depth, playoff experience and leadership. . . and then he went and crushed the offseason. This year, he needs another star. I'm curious to see if he's willing to pay the price and cash in his chips to go All in on Hayward and Gobert. I think the moment is right for it and has been building towards exactly that. I've said for a couple of years that I thought this was the offseason that the Jazz would look to make their big move.

I think the best move (again) would have to come as a trade during the draft (prior to free agency moves) and then re-up everyone with Burd rights. Then try to add a player or two to replace Mack, Withey, Burks and Diaw. I'm pretty sure that Teodosic is going to be a target to replace Mack. No idea on the others. Iso Joe wasn't even on my radar until they signed him. All I know is that they can't count on Dante or Hood to become a star and expect Hayward to stay. They need to make a significant move to close the gap between themselves and the Warriors.

I'm not completely against this idea, but I don't think using the warriors as a realistic bar of measurement is a good idea.

I mean, this team as currently constructed, could be a 60 win team with healthy Hill and Favors. Add to that a little improvement and internal growth and maybe we are a 65 win team. Is that really a team you tear down because you don't think you're good enough?

Realism aside, CP3 would be a dream.

The problem is he lost to us. Had he not lost to us I think it might have been easier to get him. He is a proud man first and foremost, I dunno if joining a team that had just beaten him is something he would do.

In terms of the fit I think it's a fantastic fit.

Why do I unhide your posts sometimes? ****ing garbage.

Yeah, it would be nice to have a PG without injury issues for once.

I think if he was playing for us we would be able to take a lot of the pressures off of him having to make every single plays himself. Hayward can handle the ball some too, so CP3 can sit back and hit open 3s on occasion as well.

It would be a great fit for him as an ageing vet as well, ala Joe Johnson, I don't think Joe has put up so many open 3s in his life. Also George Hill, all he's doing is occasional drives and being asked to hit wide open 3s.

Just to put things in perspective a little, Utah has about 23 million in cap space going into next season. However, that doesn't take into account cap holds on Hill and Ingles, so if unless you renounce your rights on those guys, we don't really have that much space. Cap holds eat more than half.

Not sure where you are getting 65 million.

I'm also not even counting a cap hold on Hayward, as he could still opt in. If he opts out, cap holds wipe out any cap space we have now.

Just to put things in perspective a little, I guarantee LoPo has no idea what a cap hold is.

We need to think big. We have a bunch of midlevel assets but we need an impact player. We dont need 4 picks in the 20-30 range. I want to target somebody via trade.

...and with all that deep playoff experience.

He can get that experience here. I have no doubt that a CP3-Hayward-Gobert led team would be the second best in the league.
