I've voted for a republican for President many times. This year was the first year I voted for a Democrat.

Locally I won't vote for Republicans because I dream of one day having a 2 party system in Utah.

I'm not sure if you could even call the GOP in Utah "Republican." It's more of a Mormon real estate lobbyist sausage fest than anything else.

When you look at the makeup of the legislature, it's pretty astonishing how homogenous it is. 80 percent are white mormon males. In just the House of Reps alone (75 reps), there are only 15 women (20 percent). Of that 20 percent, 10 women are from Salt Lake and 9 are Democrat. The rest of the state contributes 5 women reps. That's it.

So not only is the legislature male and republican dominated, but you also see a completely disproportionate number are real estate developers who graduated from BYU. Literally, the entire legislative and executive office are composed of real estate developers (Gov Herbert, Majority leader Neiderhouser, and Speaker Hughes).

Utah State, Weber State, and Utah are underrepresented throughout the legislature.

The entire Congressional representation is Mormon and Republican.

Lee & Hatch (Senators)
Stewart, Bishop, Love, Chaffetz- all of the top contenders are Mormon Repubs (Reps)

And it absolutely shows in their policies and legislation. I don't know why the local LDS population not only is okay with this but seems to be very enthusiastic in their support of it.

It really only takes 51 percent of the votes to get over 80% of the representation in the state.

Let's see those studies, you also left out the comparison.

Or are you talking current coverage of Trump? Because that is a meaningless stat, with nothing to compare it to. The reason it is mostly negative is because there is mostly only negative coverage.

I am talking about during the election time when we can compare his coverage to Clinton's coverage.

well, how is it mostly negative. a coalmine opnening in pensylvania because of trump undoing obama regulation is positive news. ooh wait you hate trees, and dont wnat their to be co2 so trees cant breathe!

the stock-market hitting highs everywhere! ooh wait that is Obama doing.!

jus tgathe ra variety of state and local newspaper see how much those papers talk about russia and other news.

if you think their is only negative things. then you have been brainwashed

This is a very good post.

You are correct.

I truly wonder if those accusing Clinton as being "so dishonest" and comparing her to Trump (which isn't an accurate comparison as I will show) are truly letting data guide their opinions? Much like supply-side economics and climate change, it is as if one side has closed their minds to facts after being bombarded for years with a certain narrative.

Although this isn't as comprehensive as what a colleague of mine has, this simple one will suffice:

https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-...ing-hillary-clinton-donald-trump-truth-o-met/

View attachment 5279View attachment 5280

One can easily see which candidate was more honest.

The most powerful findings are in the following list

 • Clinton has nearly 4x as many "True" statements as Trump.
 • Clinton has 29 "False" statements compared to Trump's 134.
 • Trump has 65 "Pants on Fire" statements compared to Clinton's 7.

Furthermore, look at the politfact record of the GOP primary. Trump was clearly the biggest liar, followed by Cruz and Carson (Rubio was fairly honest).

https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-...ct-checking-2016-gop-presidential-candidates/

Nothing really stands out for the DNC's candidates:

https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-...hecking-2016-democratic-presidential-candida/

So I guess the question remains, are we letting data guide our opinions? Those who claim that Clinton was in the same zip code as Trump in terms of lying must be one of those on 5th ave who witness Trump's slaying of innocents and still will vote for him.

Recently, a pro-Trump neighbor talked to me. They said that although they voted for Trump, they would've voted for Sanders had he been the nominee. How is that possible considering that Sander's agenda would've been the opposite of Trump's? So was this neighbor basing his political views on a candidate's views and agenda? Or had his view of Clinton been tainted so badly over her 20+ year career that voting for her was never considered an option?

If Elizabeth Warren runs in 2020, what will her reception be? Especially when you consider her views to be far left of Clinton's?

politifact is stronlgy biased against the right bro!

when something is blatantly true they call it true if it is a left winger who said it. and half right if a right winger said it!

Correct

As Utah becomes more diverse and becomes an increasingly heterogeneous population, its representation becomes increasingly more homogeneous and authoritarian. Just look at what happened when anyone questioned the legislature about air quality, public education spending, Medicaid expansion, the prison relocation, and liquor laws. At the congressional level, the heterogeneous population has lashed out in frustration at its representation. Were their concerns respected? Nope. They were instantly labeled as "paid protestors."

In Utah, it's so easy to become elected. As you said, you only need to get half the votes and you will be elected. Typically, all one needs to do to be elected here in Utah is: Have male genitalia, have a R by your name, and claim that you're a Mormon.

Sadly, many of the reps aren't responsive to their constituents because of their safety. As a result, issues that many Mormons agree on with their "gentile" peers are ignored. Issues such as public lands, air quality, health care, public education, even liquor (I don't know anyone who supports variations of the Zion curtain or the DABC).

Finally something worth reading.

This site has become unbearable. Red, please delete your existence. DutchJazzer at least provides a little comedy.

The reason it is mostly negative is because there is mostly only negative coverage.

This made me chuckle. "The reason the sky is blue is because the blue sky is blue".

I laugh a lot about the Trump hysteria but the thing that get's me is how two of the most rational heads on JF seem to have completely lost it when it comes to Trump. I hope y'all can find your heads and let go of the hate.

So no proof or link to these studies?

That was a type I fixed. There is negative coverage because most the things he is doing are negative.

I dont hate Trump, just dislike his polices.

I do like that trump has gotten people more involved in politics and paying attention. More people should be upset by their politicians. Most of them suck at their job.

I know what you meant but it still made me chuckle for some dumb reason.
