I've voted for a republican for President many times. This year was the first year I voted for a Democrat.
Locally I won't vote for Republicans because I dream of one day having a 2 party system in Utah.
I'm not sure if you could even call the GOP in Utah "Republican." It's more of a Mormon real estate lobbyist sausage fest than anything else.
When you look at the makeup of the legislature, it's pretty astonishing how homogenous it is. 80 percent are white mormon males. In just the House of Reps alone (75 reps), there are only 15 women (20 percent). Of that 20 percent, 10 women are from Salt Lake and 9 are Democrat. The rest of the state contributes 5 women reps. That's it.
So not only is the legislature male and republican dominated, but you also see a completely disproportionate number are real estate developers who graduated from BYU. Literally, the entire legislative and executive office are composed of real estate developers (Gov Herbert, Majority leader Neiderhouser, and Speaker Hughes).
Utah State, Weber State, and Utah are underrepresented throughout the legislature.
The entire Congressional representation is Mormon and Republican.
Lee & Hatch (Senators)
Stewart, Bishop, Love, Chaffetz- all of the top contenders are Mormon Repubs (Reps)
