Hayward to Boston

Also, some people probably forget as it was a pretty small footnote at the time, but last Summer DL did address a rumor (he denied it iirc) that Hayward had asked to be traded. So the accounts of Hayward leaving the Jazz with no warning or clue to his intentions the year prior may be wrong.

I remember that, DL and someone else (Quin?) walked in on him in the Gym, said they had a glowing conversation and hayward acted surprised and seemed happy. hahahaha

Did Carroll say he should have stayed in Utah

He made a great career move. He became an All-Star in Atlanta and got a huge contract in Toronto. His career went way better after he left.

In the case of Dwill/Carroll it was more the injuries than anything.

This is what I was jokingly alluding to. Since it was injuries that did DWill in I took the Hayward comment to mean a career derailed by injuries.

I think the worst part about Hayward to Celtics is think leaving for Boston was part of the plan for a while now. Even had the Jazz taken the Warriors to 7 games, I think still leaves. He didn't want to be here anymore.... there just isn't a more simple way to look at it. He's probably a good dude overall, but he's also a little bit of a douche imo.

Sorry, but there is no way a player bolts after taking the warriors to 7 games.

If Hayward indeed asked to be traded and we didn't that's gross incompetence IMO. That should be fireable offense. I know there were rumors Hayward was unhappy and wanted to get traded to Boston, but the word that came out of it is that it was all fake and DL and Hayward had a talk about the rumor and what Hayward really wanted and so on and so forth. But yeah, if he truly told them I want out and they still didn't trade him... that's bad. That becomes all on DL.

I disagree. The Jazz put together a great team. Without injuries it would have been 60 wins and likely a conference finalist. I think that would have convinced Hayward to stay. They Jazz took a gamble and failed, I dont blame them.

What could the Jazz have really gotten for trading him in his contract year? Does Boston really give up anything knowing they had a great chance of scoring him for free? Did the whole NBA know the rumblings? If Butler and George dont go West, does Hayward still go to Boston?

IMO it was better to try.

u acting like ****ward is KD. If I'm the GM of the jazz and he was rumbling, then he'd have been out the door in a hurry. The league didn't view him as a distressed asset and we could have netted a nice little return. It would have really helped us leap into the hypothetical post-GSW window.

Locke said a year ago a Boston FO member told him they were getting Hayward. He said he blew that off as just posturing at the time, but maybe it wasn't. Maybe everyone in the league expected this to happen but since the Jazz and Hayward's camp is so tight (and the media didnt really care about him until a month ago) it just never got out to the public sphere.

Thanks Gordon for the great years and for the gracious goodbye letter. Last year was amazing, I had thought you had plateaued but you took it to another level. Best of luck in Boston, I hope that you guys challenge the Cavs every year.

I for one will be rooting for you going forward, in thanks for all your good years here. Ignore the small-minded people here posting all sorts of ugly stuff about you. I guess their lives are so shallow and empty that they cannot just appreciate past effort and respect a man's decision to move on to a better place. OF COURSE, they would ALL turn down a better job to show absolute loyalty to their current employer. Of course they would.

Well, someone took his letter seriously. I guess there's that.

It's nice to know you think Boston is a better place than Utah. I guess you have that in common with Hayward as well.

As a former resident of Salt Lake City and Boston, let me tell you something:

If you prioritize living in an urban environment, then Boston kicks the ****ing trash out of SLC. Boston is a cool city. I'm way less hype on "city" than I used to be, but I'm not in my 20s anymore. Nor am I married to a teenager.

F'n Cook at my workplace told me they were getting Hayward months ago! Not kidding lol

I will definitely take the time to listen when I can. I want to quickly mention that I think this all starts with Brad Stevens. If Stevens coached in Miami then I don't think Boston is in the picture. My guy tells me Hayward was comfortable in Utah and wouldn't have left without a familiar situation to go to.

I think it's fair to assume that Hayward was learning towards Boston for quite a while now. At the same time I bet he was in denial during the season and didn't want to address the situation. It's fair to criticize Hayward for avoiding the situation until free agency. I'm sure the thought of leaving made him feel guilty and he just blocked it out.

Appreciate your posts mate, very reasonable. I really don't think the allure of Tatum and Brown developing has anything to do with his wanting to go to Boston at all though. Utah was in a position to win big now which is what he has said for the last year, and to be competitive with the big teams West apart from the Warriors. It's become pretty apparent that he made his mind up quite a while ago and has pretty much lied to everyone in the organization. I think even if we pushed the Warriors to 7 games he's still going. Everyone is salty because every thing that could possibly have been done for him has and it hasn't made any difference.

Clearly for some reason he's just so bent on reuniting with his college coach above all other things. Which seems strange for a grown man. It's very telling that he's obviously deceived his teammates as well going by their tweets. The whole 3 meetings tour and "he still hasn't made his mind up " is clearly a farce designed to try to make him look like the good guy. He played everyone including quite possibly his agent as well partially and left the Jazz with zero time to make alternate arrangements to chase other players. If he'd informed management or at least not crapped on with all this BS and just said he wanted a new start i'd be real disappointed but still liked and respected him. The way it's gone down i now have zero respect for him. He obviously isn't who a lot of people thought he was.. Terrific player tho, i just don't swallow all those other reasons.
