Hayward signing outright (reported rumor)

Yeah, I can only hope that Hood, Exum, Mitchell, etc can put in the same work that Hayward has. I think they all have potential to be very good players and borderline all stars, Exum especially. I basically consider last year to be Exums rookie year as far as development goes.

It will be fun to watch.

Hayward is not part of this, ok?

He's signing with Boston regardless. Just ignore that he's even involved.
Ok, so taking Haywood out of it..... Celtics get a 2nd round pick and lose absolutely nothing.
Seems kinda dumb for the celtics to say "we don't want a free 2nd round pick"

That sounds like a very un-green thing to be said a few years ago. I'd be interested in seeing some quotes to back that up.
Well now that Haywood is on a different team its ok for green to really be hyped about him.

1. Celtics don't need a 2nd round pick. They already have more than they can use.
2. Celtics help a potential competitor. Boston needs another "star" somehow. Giving Utah $30M to freely use - without having to clear cap room - puts Utah in direct competition.

It makes absolutely ZERO sense for Boston to give Utah a TPE. Sorry to say, but if the Jazz were in the reverse situation, Utah should try to get an asset out of Team X and ask for at least a protected first.

Again, you're forgetting that it's an asset they can use when trading with 29 other teams.

If it was just us involved, sure. But maybe Ainge wants to throw it in with another teade to improve what he gets back. A late 2nd round pick ain't worth a whole lot, tbh.

Jazz having that tpe could hurt the celtics..... could also help the celtics if the jazz got a free agent using that tpe who would have went to toronto, Milwaukee, cleveland, washington, etc etc.

Jazz and Celtics are after the same thing - an impact 4.

What do you mean maybe Ainge wants to throw it in another trade? Trade exceptions aren't one time thing. He can do a trade with us that creates one, then he can do a trade with Charlotte that creates one, then a trade with Brooklyn that creates one... etc etc. It's NOT an asset for them.

And a 2nd pick is the usual compensation in these types of trades.

And exactly

Celtics aren't signing an impact 4. They have no cap room and no assets, other than picks (which they will not part with) to trade. Boston is they is, with IT on Deck to completely break their cap.

I guess I'm wrong on this. I don't fully understand but oh well. Would be nice to have that tpe

For some reason I thought the celtics were cash strapped to the point that they couldn't go after anyone or anything at this point.

Well apparently I was wrong on how the TPE works too. Idk.

I'd be curious if you still took your stance understanding a TPE. They aren't given. It's just simply when you have a deal that a team takes back significantly less salary, they get an exception for the size of that salary to use in trades. Ainge gives up nothing and collects a second round pick.

A team gets a traded player exception when they trade a player and don't receive any salary back. That's why if we traded Hayward we'd get a TPE.

The people who think the Celtics should have gave us it for free aren't thinking. Ainge isn't going to give away a free asset. Why should he?

Now, if the Jazz offered a 2nd-round pick I don't know why they wouldn't do it. They'd get a 2nd-round pick for nothing.

I take the Occams razor approach to this. We know Ainge is an *******. He probably didn't agree to this for that reason alone.
