Ekpe Udoh?

Sources tell Ekpe Udoh agreed to sign with Utah Jazz.
Interesting news. I was expecting Bradley to be the first backup to Gobert. Maybe staff didnt like his summer league performance enough. And im not optimist Udoh can play together well with Gobert.
Ideas?

It looks like a done deal. But you never know until Wojnarowski declares :)

Good move for a backup 5 who can fill in until Bradley is ready.
I was about to credit the Jazz for signing another international player...until I read Udoh is from Oklahoma.

Another defense only guy. Hasn't played in the NBA since 2015 and hasn't been in a rotation since 2014. He's been terrific playing overseas however.

What I like about this move is that when Gobert went down to injury last year Utah's interior defense disappeared. Udoh should help alleviate that problem.

http://www.draftexpress.com/article/what-did-we-learn-at-the-2017-euroleague-final-four-5954/

Ekpe Udoh, the #6 pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, switched, slid, stripped, contested, recovered, rotated and swatted Fenerbahce to a 2017 Euroleague Final Four title, the Turkish power's first in club history.

Written off as a 'bust' relative to his lofty draft status and just-decent NBA production (10.8 PER in 274 games played over five seasons), the recently turned 30-year-old Udoh thoroughly dominated the Euroleague Final Four with his stout, versatile defense, putting the clamps on Greek legend and three time Euroleague Final Four MVP Vassilis Spanoulis, one game after neutralizing incumbent Euroleague MVP Sergio Llull (the 34th overall pick in 2009).

Thanks to his excellent feet, massive 7' 4.5 wingspan, sharp timing and overall defensive range, Udoh killed nearly every ball screen with his 'switchability', stalling Olympiacos' offense. His dominant defensive performance (seven blocks in 75 Euroleague Final Four minutes) begs the question - why didn't Udoh stick in the NBA?

The former Michigan big turned Baylor transfer certainly could have done more to maximize his opportunities at the NBA level, but the league had yet to evolve into what it is today. At 6-10, Udoh was 'undersized' for a center, and didn't quite have the skill set to fit as a four man, evident by his porous 8.9 points per 40 minutes on 44% shooting as a rookie in Golden State. With post touches more prevalent, Udoh didn't exactly fit on either end - undersized as a defender on the block, and raw as an interior scorer. His toughness was also questioned, and his lack of defensive rebounding was worrisome in a league that played bigger, and wasn't nearly as switch-heavy as it is today.

But since his underwhelming seasons with the Warriors (2010-12), Bucks (2012-14) and Clippers (2014-15), the NBA has trended back in Udoh's direction. He's without question a five in today's NBA, and his perimeter defense and shot blocking instincts are as valuable as ever. Spanoulis, who shot 2-for-12 from the field largely due to Udoh's stifling perimeter defense, definitely isn't Steph Curry, Chris Paul or Kyrie Irving, but Udoh fits a prototype that all teams are looking for, and would most definitely be a defensive asset on virtually any NBA team today.

More than anything, Udoh's Euroleague Final Four dominance emphasized the importance of having a big who can switch ball screens when involved in pick and roll, and put a lid on the rim when he's in help position. His much-improved passing is certainly an added bonus (3.0 assists per 40 minutes this past season), but it's his ability to switch, guard either big spot, and protect the rim that make him an attractive option for a team looking to bring him back over, although after his now-legendary weekend in Istanbul, he likely wouldn't come on the cheap.

Final four MVP for Fenerbache. I'd say that's good enough to back up Gobert. Something else is up, IMO, with Favors.

On July 11, 2016, Udoh re-signed with Fenerbahçe, on a 1+1 contract. In the 2016–17 season, Udoh won the EuroLeague championship with Fenerbahçe.[13] He was named the EuroLeague Final Four MVP, after his performance in the Final Four.

Bradley is RAW. I think Utah is very high on Bradley, but realizes he's 1-2 years away, especially offensively. I see him starting on the Stars and playing 30 mins/per. He needs playing time to improve. He won't get that sitting on the bench behind Rudy.

A trade has to be coming in the next few days I would assume.

Gobert/Udoh/Bradley
Favors/Joe Jesus/Jerebko/Bolomboy
Jingles/Sefolosha
Hood/Mitchell/Burks
Rubio/Exum

That's 14.

I expect Neto to be back. That's 15.
I expect them to keep NWG. That's 16.
They have interest in Eric Griffin. That's 17. But Griffin seems redundant with Jerebko and Bolomboy on the roster.

Overall the roster is feeling exceptionally crowded right now.

While other teams are doubling up on offense, Utah is tripling down on defense. Utah might be going for some football scores this year. Does Utah have the defense to set records for fewest points allowed (since the institution of the 24-second clock)?

Loving this!

Ekpe Udoh is a big Atatürk fan.

I will cheer for him 'till my least breath!

Meh on NWG. Griffin probably gets signed by someone else to a guaranteed roster spot or returns to Italy. Jazz can always scour the rookie bin for a couple of 2-way players.

Bolomboy's roster spot might be shaky. He's going to need to earn it back in training camp.

But yes, something MIGHT be up. This is a flurry of activity coming right before Diaw's contract is about to expire.

Wow wow wow. I'm so excited. He's the best player in Europe now, also highest paid.
I know him well because he plays for my team and the arena is five minutes walk away from my house!

I'm shocked if it's $6.5/2 years. He was making much more here.
I'm so happy and sad at the same time. He's so much loved in Istanbul, such a quality dude on and off the court.

I can't help but feel it's being an uninspiring free agency. It's not that Thabo, Jerebko or Udoh are bad players, it's just that none of them is much of an improvement in the 2 main areas of need -outside shooting and overall scoring- which will hurt the Jazz over the course of the season.

Since they didn't sign other cheap options like Rudy Gay or Pat Pat, I would've liked to see that at least one of those moves was to bring somebody like Mirotic who can add more offensively and would benefit a lot in a more stable situation, or take a flyer on an undrafted prospect with some upside without committing any more salary for 2018.

PS: Hate this nonsense about every single guy coming over from Europe being labeled an "Euroleague Superstar". Udoh has had a very good couple of years in Turkey, but he's no more of a superstar in Europe than DeAndre Jordan is in the US, and that's being generous.

Just did a quick cap calculation. Someone check my math!
1. Release Diaw, renounce Withey, keep the cap hold for Ingles.
2. Sign Udoh, Sefolosha and Jerebko. Jazz are at $99M (equals cap)
3. Sign Ingles. Jazz are at $111M.
