Epke > Gobert (troll title)

I mean, he can't just run over guys and dunk the ball every play. Rubio can't magically throw him the ball if he isn't open because he the weak-side defender cut his path off to the rim. The only time I have been disappointed with Gobert this year when he threw the ball away against Minnesota.

Nobody mentioned anything about his offense. He doesn't look NEARLY the same at the defensive end. Even when Beverley drove on him, I had little confidence that Gobert will stop him, since he's been late on help D most possessions, and he's been stopping short on his challenges. Udoh has been easily the superior defender thus far into the season, and I don't think that would have been the case in prior years.

Yeah because he was worried about the alley-oops to DJ.

Udoh has not been a superior defender. He is playing against backups in limited minutes.

I don't see what yall are saying about Gobert at all.

He just has more focus on him now. There is less space and players are crowding him more now.

And yet he and Quin still improved his offensive impact. He's also been a beast on the boards. Players are avoiding him like crazy this year so his d stats are going down. That doesn't mean he's not impacting, it's a result of his impact.

I'm not so sure. Limited minutes yes, but he looks to be far more effective. He has also been having matchups against starters, he completely shut down Griffin on a couple possessions. Westbrook tried to drive on him in the OKC game and Udoh shut that down quick. So mostly bench sure but not exclusively. Udoh has been fantastic on D and better than Gobert IMO. As mentioned Gobert is still a monster and changes the flow of opposing Ds just by being on the court. Udoh hasn't.

Unless DJ played the last 4 games, I don't think that's it. Gobert has been uncharacteristically timid. We aren't hallucinating here.

I'm not worried about Gobert. He is still playing really well, just not quite as well as he was. He will get going.

It was only a matter of time before the pitchforks started appearing for Rudy. Fandom is ****.

I want to agree with Saint Cy, but Rudy has seemed less impactful to me. I'm sure a lot of it is that people are avoiding him (this will happen with Udoh soon too) but there have been times when guys have gotten layups or dunked with Rudy right by them. I've seen both Ingles and Thabo get in Gobert's ear for not helping out.

The Jazz have also been caught a few times not getting back on defense. I'm not used to that.

Maybe it has to do with the increased pace of play. The team is running a bit more, sometimes it looks like Rubio is the only started with enough energy to keep running.

I think it's just people built Rudy up in their mind during the off-season as a guy who never gets scored on. He gets scored on, it happens. No defender is perfect 100% of the time, and sometimes guys just make tough shots.

And yes, if every defender had to go against exclusively playoff teams, their defense stats would be worse than the full season averages when you have complete **** teams mixed in (referring to the lulzy stats comparing 4 games this season to the previous 2 years).

The Jazz did this vs a super team but Gobert's defense has sucked this year?

I dont think anyone is saying Gobert sucks. I have not heard that. People are just saying he isnt quite playing as hard as he did last year or not quite as well. I think most people expect him to get back to the level he was playing just before he got hurt last year and more.

I question these stats. You pulled them from NBA.com and they seem to have a history of bad stats. Basketball-reference has him at 118 to 100 this year, which is more in line with his box score. He's had 3 double doubles and one sub-par game. His ts% is an insane .735. I have a hard time seeing him having anywhere close to a net -20.1 on/off.

3 triple doubles?

Post the other stats. Worth comparing.

Udoh has been great on defense but his offense is limited and he seems to have a hard time holding onto the ball.

Corrected, thanks. Why do you think the NBA stats are any more legitimate than BBRF's? I've found NBA.com to consistently be a poor website and the -20.1 is absolutely wrong IMO.

Those rating are calculated differently from those websites. NBA has great stats and much more in depth but BBRF has some good stuff as well. Both seem to be fairly accurate they are just different. As far as Off rtg goes here is from NBA.com:
OffRtg (Offensive Rating)
Measures a team's points scored per 100 possessions. On a player level this statistic is team points scored per 100 possessions while he is on court. This statistic is also more exact than typical Player "possession based" calculations, because we calculate rather than estimate players' possessions on the court.

Even on BBRF it says it is an estimate.

Either way they both show Gobert is down from last year. He is especially down if you compare to how he was playing in the final few months of the season. Rudy even played better against the Clippers injured in the playoffs last year. Rudy got much better as the season went on last year. Maybe Rudy is playing better than the beginning of last year? I have not looked it up.
