Team Defense Watch

Last year, we finished 4th in team defensive efficiency behind the Warriors, Spurs and Hawks, with a 1.029 rating. The Warriors were best at 1.009.

The Spurs were the best the year prior at .964. We were 1.006 that season, good for fifth in team defensive efficiency.

The year before that, 2014-2015, the Dubs were best at .980.

This season we are currently just 8th in defensive efficiency but sit at .971. That's elite. And it's elite despite having played what should be an offensive juggernaut in Denver, the Big Three in OKC, and Minnesota who has plenty of big time scorers.

My hope is that, by the end of this easy stretch (21 games in), our defensive efficiency is at a mind-boggling .950, a number that would be far superior to any best defensive team in recent memory.

So yeah, let's ****ing go.

Yeah, but that offense though. Turnovers galore! We have been poor rebounders. And there are long stretches where our defense looks only slightly above par where we give up leads and have had to fight uphill every game.

.956 now.

3rd in the NBA after last night's game. Boston is 1st at .946 and OKC 2nd at .949.

1.016. 3rd in the NBA behind the Spurs (1.015) and Celts (1.007).

Last year, we were 4th at 1.029 and the year before 5th at 1.006.

I have two questions:

1) Can anyone find what our DER is this year when Rudy plays? I imagine it’s below 1.000 and maybe as low as .930 or something crazy.
2) What was it during that stretch the second half of the year when Rudy first began starting a few years back? I recall Bill Simmons writing many times that our defensive efficiency during that stretch was historically unreal.

2) Locke 2015 : It’s only 13 games but since the all-star game the Jazz defensive rating is 89.7.

This Jazz team is amazing. Defense wins championships, and this team is built to be very, very good right now. I’m not going to be surprised if they keep building off this and finish stronger than they did last year.
