The 'BIG SWING' thread

So with 1/4 of the season behind us what big moves throughout the league can you see happening before the trade deadline?

My thoughts:

1) A Center to the Cavs.

Cavs to pick up either Cousins, Gasol or Favors. May also lay it all down and go for PG13 at the deadline if OKC hasn't improved dramatically. Then with a possible line up of Thomas, J.R, PG13, Lebron and Cousins?? They could compete with GS and if they can hold onto PG13 would be really attractive place for CP0 as an UFA...

2) Year of the Coach sacking.

Malone, Kidd, Gentry, Casey (maybe Brooks) all to be sacked by years end. In terms of Kidd theres plenty of rumors and talk that it is a matter of when not if. I'd predict we'll see Fizdale instated before there the playoffs.

3) Bucks trade Parker.

Lots of suitors, great talent but the return/asking price will be very interesting.

4) Celtics to play it cool on AD/big man trade.

While Lebron is healthy I'm expecting the Celtics to ride this year out before making any massive plays for the dominant big theyve been chasing. Would want to see what the team looks like with Benedict before they make a decision, although I'd love nothing more (other than Dante's health) to see him packaged and dealt.

5) OKC is blown up at the deadline.

Smart move and OKC will probably get back more than they paid for both Melo and PG13. I think they need to face the fact that they have Rus. They'll will never win a chip with him but if you surround him with a team of 3-D guys and let him play his high usage rate game they'll have years of 55-60 win seasons and 2nd round exits.. But it'll be fun to watch!

6) The student becomes a master.

Igor Kokoskov to be offered a full time coaching position, maybe Memphis if they blow it up..

7) The 2017 Draft Class.

I mentioned this somewhere else but imo, this draft class will be looked back upon as an All-time great class with HOFers scattered throughout the draft class. For this reason I'd like to see us poach or come up with a package to target a PF from this class, someone that was taken late 1st or during the 2nd round. Of course the dream is Kuzma but maybe a D.J Wilson or T.J Leaf type... I remember reading we were interested in D.J Wilson during the pre draft but that could have been just a smoke screen with how the Jazz operate.

8) Jazz moves.

It seems we have infinite paths we could go at this point with all of our trade chips (Rubio, Favs, Burks maybe Hood) fluctuating drastically in trade value throughout the year. A stretch 4 is an obvious need but there is little out there and the guys coming up on the market will cost us MAX money. Is it possible to continue to fill this role over the next few years with the Thabo's, JJs and Jerebkos of the world??

PS. I am almost totally sold on DM as the teams future PG, (even being the massive Exum homer that I am) I'll concede, the damage DM can do in the PnR, that deep 3 ball is too significant to ignore.

Whatever we do the untouchables for me are Rudy, DM and Exum. I'd need something really good to part with Hood too otherwise I'd be happy to give him his 4yr $70-80Mil and ride with him.

Besides the obvious Favs and Burks, Thabo, Jerebko, JJ, Ingles, Udoh would all have reasonable value to a contender on a short contract and may net us a 1st in a package or a couple of 2nds.

I doubt that the Thunder get anything for George. Unless OKC takes off and they start winning, a lot, he is a Laker next year.

I think OKC would be smart to trade PG13 to the Lakers for Randle and Caldwell Pope. Randle needs a new contract which LA will be hesitant to give. Caldwell Pope is the question mark. Does LA want to try to keep him long term? Would OKC rather have Clarkson? Etc

What is the Lakers incentive to do a trade? George has publicly said he wants to be a Laker and will be a free agent this off season. LA simply needs to wait and they have their man. Short of OKC tearing it up all the sudden in which case they wont do any trades.

The Cavs would be crazy not to try to use their 2018 first (not the Brooklyn pick) and Frye's expiring to acquire more help somewhere.

Frye is only playing 12 minutes per game and most are in mop up duty. The Cavs need a center so Love can play PF which better suits him in most matchups. Thompson becomes a very good energy option off the bench.

This is where Favors makes the most sense. The longer we keep Favors, the more people are going to stress about his future here, compare his performances to Gobert's, the minutes wasted getting Gobert and the rest of the roster on the same page, etc.

That's why I said it would be smart for OKC. All three players I mentioned are expirings or restricted free agents. If LA doesn't want Randle long term, it makes sense to get PG13 now to not only get him used to the roster, but also to start recruiting another star to join him in the summer.

A contender would still give up a 1st for him and in the event that GS has issues or Curry struggles coming back from his injury the leagues top teams may go real hard to win it this year.

Last year of Lebron... my bet is they use that pick.on Cousins or PG13.

Best to be certain, surely... Atm that roster is a long way from winning and you can pretty much scratch off Lebrons name as a prospect.

Id hope Cavs end up with a lineup similar to this.

Thomas (who will make way for CP0)
2 guard (how about Burks???)
PG13 (Convince him to stay, CP0 joins)
Lebron
Cousins/Favs or Gasol

I think Love, Thompson and maybe even JR NEED to go. Get assets for them, use their 2 x 1st round picks this year and maybe a future and whoever else. Just get it done.

Lots to unpack... I'll just say we don't need a stretch 4... Thabo and Jonas are great there and a healthy Joe Johnson did great last year. Lots of options. We just need to move in a direction where we are always playing a stretch 4. Could also get a stretch/playmaking 4 that is younger to groom while we have these options.

I think Favs could get you the Cleveland pick, but you are taking back Shumpert not Frye. Frye is not a throw in for them... he's valuable. You may be able to get Osman too if you take Shump.

They won't move Thompson unless he wants out or its for a mega deal. He's with Lebron's agency and one of his guys.

I think the Jazz need to move Ricky if they can trade his contract. He's overpriced for what he can give us and not an ideal fit with Rudy... all acquisitions going forward need to fit with Rudy (not always easy) and DM (pretty easy to make that work). I have a feeling he will be on the roster through the end of the year though.

I doubt the Jazz trade Ricky before his contract expires. He's a good point guard, probably the best we've had since Deron and Exum is injury prone. While I believe that Exum is the future, he still needs to develop.

Who are these "stretch/playmaking 4 that is younger to groom" that you speak of??

After TT's recent finals efforts and bring a Kardasian into the fold I dont think he's super high on Lebrons xmas list.

What team would Rubio be a good fit in?? It feels like we lower is value every time he plays...

@Jason please bring back neg rep in some form.

Couple observations part of the Cavs discussion.

#1 - Tristan Thompson is borderline untradeable. His contract sucks and LeBron likes him. If you dumped him, it pisses off LBJ and you can't afford to do that.

#2 - Really hard to trade Love right now. Can you get equal value considering his contract?

#3 - Cavs are mostly content because IT will come back.

#4 - They only make a trade to address a major need area. Well, that need area is C and Favors addresses that beautifully. I think the Cavs would trade Frye and their 2018 1st for Favors in a heartbeat. Frye only played in one Finals game last year. He played 11 minutes in Game 2 which was a blowout. Favors would play every game because he would be the best center on the roster.

I agree that the Cavs would LOVE to have Favors, but he costs them a lot more than his $12,000,000. He costs them in Luxury tax as well. That means, every dollar they take back they pay at least $2 for. I think they are in repeater tax now as well so it may be higher than that. Favors for Frye and a draft pick would be a coup for the Cavs, except it would cost them $10 million additional cash this year. Does it make them a contender? If not, why give up a high draft pick and spend the cash?

Tristan for Favors makes sense because Tristan isn't a rim protector (Favors is), Tristan is owed $17 million, $18 million, and $19 million over the next three years whereas Favors is owed $12 million this year and expires. Dumping Tristan's big contract and letting Frye/Favors contracts expire gives the Cavs $10 million cash this year AND reduces their payroll by $48 million ($7 million + $17 million dump x 2 for luxury tax) and the next year helping them resign Lebron. That should make it easier to resign IT and Lebron and continue to add vets on minimums looking for titles. For those of you who think the Cavs are in 'win now' la la land, so be it. But $58 million dollars is a lot of reasons to make that move. They are also adding a center who can protect the rim which upgrades their defense in a big way.

I would trade Favors for Tristan.

Assuming they through in the nets pick...

Pretty much any other reasonable trade scenario is a no for me with them. Not that the above trade is reasonable either.

The lost factor here is that Cleveland isn't struggling right now. They see playing very well and still have an all star player coming back from injury soon. I'm not sure why they would be motivated to do anything.

LeBron is gone after this year. They are not going to mortgage their future too much. They are going to make one last run then build/tank around whoever they draft with the nets pick.

I cant see them holding onto that nets pick. What for?? To get a head start on their rebuild??

Go ALL IN while you have Lebron and who knows, maybe you do a good enough job you convince him to stay.
