Can Exum be fixed?

When we see Exum just glide by everyone on the court and lay in a shot, you think this guy could really be good. But what are his problems and can they be fixed?

To me the biggest problem he has is toughness. First of all, he needs to grow a beard and get some tattoos on his arms. But I don't know if he even can grow a beard yet.

Second, he needs to fix his shot. It is still very awkward. For some reason his butt sticks out instead of his body being straight up like Donovan or any great shooter, for instance -- think Korver or Redick or Thompson. He kind of looks like a chicken when he shoots -- and that pun is intentional.

Third, some people question his handle but I see that as the least of his problems.

Finally, I think it's all about attitude with Dante. He needs to take some lessons from Jingling and other Aussies like Bogut and Dellavedova.

I've not given up on him, he just maybe 30 years old before it clicks.

Why is everyone so down on the guy. He looked good in a limited regular season... did some good things in this game against the team that is the second best team in the nba... has some turnover issues but I really didn’t expect him to play better in the playoffs than the regular season. Dude also has FA lingering over his head.

I think he’s made a lot of progress... we may have forgotten how far away he looked last year.

Do we know other players with amazing potential based on physical attributes but who needed fixing which actually got fixed and turned into stars? CJ Miles? Kirk Snyder? Burks? Saer Sene? DeShawn? Kris Humphries? Gerald Green?....we of course have Gianis as example but I think the odds that Exum will follow his path is very slim.

I don't think I'm being down on the guy -- while my comments are a bit tongue in cheek, I think I'm being realistic. I think he has potential but he needs to fix some things to reach it.

I've used this comparison before, but here we go:

Andre Roberson
6'7" SG
5 Years experience
269 career starts
Career 4.6ppg, highest season average has been 6.6ppg
48% fg, 26% 3p
4 rpg, 1 apg, -1 spg, -1 bpg
Salary averages $10 million per season

Even though they have 3 hall-of-famers and a great center, OKC really missed Roberson down the stretch. With him, they probably beat us in the first round. He is what you would call "invaluable" to their team.

Dante Exum
6'6" PG/SG
4 Years experience (3 if you count that he didn't play in 15-16)
67 career starts
Career 5.7 ppg, highest season average has been 8.1 ppg
40% fg, 31% 3p
2 rpg, 2 apg, -1 spg, -1 bpg
Salary TBD in summer 2018

At the very least, Exum could be a Roberson type player for us. Roberson has a 2 year head start and has been a starter for a while now. He knows his role. Exum hasn't had a role carved out for him yet. However, if we don't trust him to run the offense, just do with him what OKC does with Roberson - limit his touches. Mitchell is emerging as a PG/SG anyway. If Exum grows offensively, then great. Regardless, we will need perimeter defenders like him if we are going to contend in the coming years.

I fail to see how getting him fixed would help us (or him). He needs to be more aggressive (and potent), not less.

I don’t know about that comp... Exum is a good defender but Roberson is much better and is strong as hell... I don’t think Exum will be as great.

Offensively Exum can be so much more than Andre... he is able to get past his guy he just needs to be smarter about when he attacks and develop more as a shooter.

I think we retain him at something fair and next year we can judge him more harshly. If he gets a crazy offer 13+M per year I will help him pack. I trust our development staff more than other teams and think Exum can be good but he will need help to get there.
