Agreed... he’s a guy that can play and guard 3 positions so if he’s healthy he can play... still young and we always knew he was a project. If he gets something that jeopardizes 2019 cap space flexibility then I’m okay letting him walk. He’s not the type, because of injury, that I’d assume we could trade if just match and worry later.

I'm thinking no more than $10 at any point during the contract. So maybe something like:
18/19 season - $8
19/20 season - $9
20/21 season - team option $10

I think we need a 3 year deal even if we have to pay him $10 per year. Maybe first two years guaranteed with year 3 being a team option.

If he just improves marginally, he's a very good asset for us. Every team needs all the athletic, good defending, "switchable" players they can get. He is more valuable to this team over the next 3 years than anybody we can probably sign for $10 per year in 2018 free agency. What needs to be fixed is expectations. He seems to have a much longer learning curve that has continually been interrupted by injury. It's a real conundrum with it being a contract year. Glad it's not my decision but if they do sign him I hope he is given a bit more rein and he reaches a bit more of that potential the organization sees in him.

I can see him wanting to hit FA next year if he can't get a decent 4 year deal. I could also see us being interested in a team option for a second year because 2019 FA is really where we can and should strike.

We tanked to get a good shot at a franchise changing player... tanking only works if you do it over multiple years because sometimes things don't work out. Saric is the only guy we passed on that has been quite good... it happens.

Well, if the expectation regarding Exum is reaching a Roberson-like level, then I don't think it matters much if he is re-signed at all, since we are talking about very marginal players. Roberson, for instance, has had a PER around 10.0 each season of his career -- a PER of 15.00 means that the player efficiency is on par with league average. He is basically an enforcer with no discernible skills, including shooting. The problem is that Exum doesn't even seem cut out to be an enforcer. What can he become?

Dante can improve a lot of things that will be game changers... handle and shot at the top of the list.

Even if he was a good spot up shooter he’d space the floor and would attack close outs quite well.

I’d like to see him attack from the 45 more when he can catch it on the fly and go. Just dribbling down and beating people on straight line drives will only work so many times.

I’m really encouraged by his finishing... it still looks awkward as hell sometimes but it used to look like he would get to the rim with no plan and just throw it up.

The biggest problem is he needs reps... games are too important now to be pati my and he needs to stay healthy. I don’t see him getting anything more than the MLE next year which we would happily match. I think we’ve built up some goodwill with Dante and he will want to stick around. He may want to bolt for a starting gig if there is one out there... not sure. I’d love to keep him and I think it’d be a good long term decision for both parties to figure it out.

Fixes:better hesitation move, crossover move, midrange pull up, better three point%, better decision making.

Can he be fixed? probably, but that's a lot of stuff. (Some improvement will come with more playing time. ) He fixes one or two of those things, and he is a decent rotation player. He fixes all of it and he is an all star.
