Donovan Mitchell's Next Contract

Generally, players don't get their big payday until after their 4th year (once they've completed their rookie-scale deal). However, Donovan is not a general player.

Once Mitchell gets paid, the Jazz will have their hands tied on making big money moves, so this question is central to determining a deadline for the Jazz to use their cap flexibility.

So; WHEN IS THE SOONEST that Mitchell gets his max raise?

I think Mitchell makes an All-NBA team next year. That changes things:

Larry Coon said:
In addition, players signing a rookie scale extension can be designated by their team to receive a longer extension, totaling six seasons (including the season [?] remaining on their rookie scale contracts).

In order to qualify for the higher maximum salary, players must meet certain performance criteria. At least one of the following must be true:

  • The player was named to the All-NBA First, Second or Third team in the most recent season, or both of the two seasons that preceded the most recent season.

This means a player on their rookie-scale deal can get their extension early, correct? Does "season remaining on their rookie scale contract" mean that the raise can only come one season early (season 4, rather than season 5)? IF that is the case, the deadline to utilize whatever cap flexibility that might exist is the offseason of 2020.

I don’t fully know what happens. I would expect him to make an all NBA team before that time but at the same time the West is loaded with guards so who knows? Hope he does, and he very well may. I’m all for Donovan getting paid, he deserves it and he will get all the money in the world if he keeps his trajectory, but I agree the Jazz have money to make some mistakes and take some chances before Donovan is making bank.

Some way or another, they HAVE to use it if they want to max out their chances at gaining more great talent.

His 4th year would still be cheap... 5th year it would kick in with the max. It sounds like we could offer a 4 year extension if he made all nba next year. I think we'd still wait so we can give him the max 5th year. So we have a few offseasons to use space and really maximize his low cap number.

If he makes an All NBA Team, he is eligible for his raise early.

If Donovan is who we think he might be, he will get his raise for season 4 (a season earlier than normal [2020]). I'm wondering if it can be any earlier than that.

I haven't looked close enough, but I think he's eligible for his extension early, but not his raise. so can get a 4 year extension (plus his two rookie scale years). Or wait and get 5 years... I think we will both want to wait.

Will let someone else confirm. I don't think he's a lock to make All-NBA next year... would say it is actually unlikely, but won't put it past him.

Maybe I’m wrong, but we don’t have to extend him early, plus if we do, the most you can sign him for is 4 years. If you wait we can sign him for 5 years, but I’m not certain 100% about that.

From the quoted piece above it sounds like you can give him his max contract the last year of his rookie season if he makes an all-NBA team. Meaning the last year of his rookie contract he is eligible for that max raise. That's why it says you can extend it to 6 years isn't it? Because one of those would be the last year of his rookie contract that would end up being max money along with his next contract? I don't know, and its nice that we think this guy is so great, but maybe we look into this next off-season when we have another season of games to watch. I have no doubt he's that good and going to be that good, but we got a minute before any of this is a thought. Whenever he's eligible, the Jazz will max him out, if that's early because of making an all-nba team, then that's when they'll do it, if not and we aren't reading it right, then he'll get it at the normal time. Yes the Jazz need to maximize the next 2-3 seasons as far as spending go because Donovan is the best contract in the NBA right now, and will be for at least a couple more seasons. He is essentially at a $18-20 million a season discount right now, or for what we see him becoming and getting on his next contract. Yes they need to use that $18-20 million while they can to take some chances, and yes eventually Donovans signing that max deal at some point. Whether its one season more or less because of an all-nba team doesn't really matter too much, they need to do something before either of those scenarios come up. They are in a perfect position to do something like take on a bad contract for talent, overpay someone, or take a chance on someone while they have that financial flexibility. Once Rudy and Donovan are maxed out, is exactly what makes it hard to build a team around your two star players, and why something like what happened with Durant in GS was so unique and will likely never happen again. It's a difficult complicated thing being a GM, and Dennis has done a great job so far, so I trust whatever decisions he makes or is able to do.

Has there been a case of this to date? Early raise?

There is a reason this is relevant now: it dictates which bad contracts you're willing to accept in order to pick up additional assets (young players, picks).

I don’t think any extension changes the last year of the rookie deal. The max starts the year after and if he qualifies it can be a supermax 5 year extension (so hits the 6 year total). If he made all nba this year I think he can get the extension a year earlier but years 3-4 stay the same and you can tack 4 years onto the deal.

I feel really safe saying he’s cheap for the next three years... that is his deal and the extension is independent of that.

I think Mitchell makes an All-NBA team next year.

While I love Mitchell and think he is a special player I think him making an all NBA team next year is incredibly unlikely. I hope he does and I will gladly eat crow but no way this happens.

I think it will be close. His playoff performance would put him in or near the all-NBA and I assume he will be improved next year. I think he will be around 25 ppg, which would get him in.

He’ll be close, and I think there’s a good chance he makes it within the next few years. I hope he does.

Does a 25/5/5 player on a >50-win team make an All-NBA team? I think all of those are within reach.

I don't know if he reaches it next year or not, but I'm quite confident he does by year 3.
