Exum Contract Option

He is a player who only has up side but hasn’t really shown anything yet. Jazz org know more about him then anyone else. Utah will offer him 3-4 year 40 mill. Other teams will offer about the same. Contract with huge upside, good cap filler if team needs to trade.

Only reason he signs a QA somewhere else is if he thinks they will give him more playing time or a starting opportunity.

I think DFaves wants to be with Utah til he gets better offer and money from another team where he becomes a vital piece.
Losing both DFaves and Exum becomes troubling because Jazz send a message ...cheap salary and JUST making the playoffs is good enough to keep Jazz faithful happy "enough".
Exum is a special case as far as Utah is concerned ,if he's smart he signs a qualifying offer setting himself up for a big contract (2019)and teams bidding for him to be their starter at PG. Jazz think they have a gem in Exum and want to sign him on a "prove it" contract, so do they have to "overpay" him for next year(2 yrs)
to get him to sign a contract this summer.
My dream scenario is to get Exum PG ( 22 yrs old) to sign ,go after Mario Hezonja SF (23 yrs old ) in FA and make a trade for Marquiss Chriss PF (20 yrs old), all with tremendous athleticism and young legs ......knowing you have the best rim protector in the world behind you.
One thing I saw with Houston and Boston losing is they bombed away on 3 pters and shot themselves out of winning. You need athleticism to win and a rim protector .
Jazz core is Gobert ,Mitchell,Ingles ......secondary is Rubio and Favors ( but Favors finds another home)
This is a perfect time to sign Exum to a prominent role and add Hezonja and Chriss to the mix and there will be athletic players in all positions in front of Gobert , (25 yrs old). Shoot for the moon ,not with the highest pd players in the NBA . Ride the rim protection of Gobert and the scoring talents of Mitchell and attack with young athletic players because if you have seen the playoffs Boston and Philadelphia have athleticism to spare and filling your team with cost efficient players (Crowder,O'Neale} to your core ....you're going to get smoked and look slow . But thats the Jazz way (Snyder).

Security and opportunity is what X will be looking for. He knows how much he needs to work on and signing a 3-4yr deal still has him as an UFA at age 25-26.

Couldn't disagree more with people thinking he will take thr QO.

Im an Exum fan but even my expectations have cooled, Im still hopeful as we are yet to see a confident Exum. imo $8M/yr is more than fair.

I agree. Dante's value is totally based on potential.
for who.......sorry Dante Exum isn't a hidden unknown player in this day of athletic 3 and D players . Jazz seem to be positioning to fend off and retain Exum .Jazz credibility hinges on if they can hold onto their own players starting with Exum. Our own Jazz have set the value of Exum ,they want to retain him. He's going to get overpaid his 1st year BUT Jazz think they have a special player and expect payoff to start happening with Exum being healthy. Beginning next year it will be Gobert,Mitchell and Exum and Jazz will be targeting Golden State for West Coast supremacy.

Couldn't find a good thread to throw this in... apologies.

One contract option with Dante that I hadn't considered is the contract structure Alan Williams got in Phoenix. He got a 3 year deal with the second year unguaranteed. If they don't pick it up they only pay him for the one year.

I want max flexibility in 2019. My big hesitation on Dante is that if he sustains another injury he would be untradeable. The Dante haters can say what they like, but he will get offers around the MLE (4/36).

What if we offered Dante 3/36... first year starting at $13M, Second year (unguaranteed) 12M, third year 11M

So both years 2-3 fall under the unguarantee... and if he disappoints we can cut him with no future salary. Gives us more salary flexibility... he gets a one year overpay and if he stays healthy he's a good value. Not sure that is enough for him to pass on LT security, but you gotta believe he believes in himself.

Just an interesting wrinkle I was thinking of.

Jazz would do this. Dante would not.

What exactly has he done that shows you that he is worth a good contract?
