For me, I still like Favs at the 5 when Rudy sits. I don't think you can just point to W-L record when Rudy was out. That just happened to coincide with a horrific schedule.

Udoh gives Utah rim protection, but he's a liability on offense. He can't hit even a gimme, let alone a free throw. Favs still offers some stout defense inside and is very good on the P&R and midrange shots. I'm all about versatility and matchups. Yes, there are definitely times Favs + Gobert don't work. And Quin often didn't finish with Favors. But there are other times (like against two bigs that they're also a plus).

Paul George unexpectedly saying he wants to sign with Utah would change things, but barring that,

1. Re-sign Favors and Exum
2. Draft someone like Heurter, Brown or Musa. I'm all for BPA, but prefer a big wing in the draft.
3. Make an offer to Bjelica
4. Re-sign the 3 non-guaranteed players. Or maybe just 2 if a good 2nd-rounder is drafted and a roster spot is needed. Jerebko is most expendable if Minnesota doesn't match for Bjelica.
5. Use expirings of Burks, Jerebko, Thabo and Udoh and the 2019 pick at the deadline to trade for a scorer - either a starter or a 6th man.

I haven't looked into it myself, but according to Locke, our defensive rating was just as good with Jerebko, Sefelosha, and I believe even Ingles at the 4 next to Gobert as it was with Favors at the 4 next to Gobert. The only player that really killed our defensive rating when playing the 4 was Joe Johnson.

Having looked at them recently I would disagree with that. But I would happily look at other stats.


One issue might be if he is looking at two year's ago stats. Favors was hobbled all season and maybe that hurts his stats when you put it with this year's. Although last time I looked favors was still our best net rating of any big combo with Gobert 2 years ago even when he was hurt.

This is the safest route to go. I don't think it gives us that "2nd offensive star" we wish we had, but this roster gives us a fighting chance should injuries work in our favor come playoff time. If we don't strike gold with a draft pick or the deadline deal, we don't really have a good chance to add a significant difference maker.

I just re-listened and according to Locke in the 576 minutes this year that the Jazz used a stretch 4 in the lineup with Gobert the defensive rating was 97 and the minutes played with Favors and Gobert on the floor together the defensive rating was 98. So our defense rating was actually slightly better with Gobert on the floor with either Crowder, Jerebko or Sefelosha than it was with Favors on the floor with Gobert. FWIW Locke also mentioned that every combination the Jazz have had on the floor with Gobert at the 4 over the last 2 years (Johnson, Jerebko, Crowder, Sefelosha) has a plus/minus equal to or better than the plus/minus with Favors and Gobert on the floor together.

Are you suggesting that we sign Favors to a one year deal or a long term deal? I agree with everything you posted as long as we're just signing Favors to a one year deal. Signing Favors to a long term deal will kill our cap space for 2019 when there are a ton of really good free agents for us to pursue.

Utah will have about 51m in contracts in the 2019 off-season. So assuming everyone signed 1 year deals and we renounce our holds, we're sitting very pretty to retool the team around Rudy and Donovan. But this doesn't take into account extending Ricky (assuming that's high on the list right now), anyone we signed this offseason, or rookie deals. I think we'll have reasonably closer to 15 to 20m next offseason, and that's with the small bump.

If Fav's leaves and is a starting 5 on another team playing 35+ minutes he'd better hope for a long term deal with a good guarantee. He won't hold up. It's a proven fact that he can't absorb those kind of minutes against centers. His best situation is here at the four and back up five, but it's not necessarily the best situation for the team. Wherever he lands I hope they manage his minutes and he can stay healthy. I've always liked him and his attitude.

Favors is a weird player and I’m glad I don’t have to determine his future w/ the team. He’s real handy in some matchups. I remeber when PG13 was isod against favors towards the end of OKC’s playoff life and he could not get a bucket. The other thing I always think is that no matter who you figure to replace Favors with in the lineup, it always ends up as a guy you’d feel really confident in Favors being able to shut down and at the very least stalemate the matchup.

Just give it up. NO star is coming to Utah. No one. Ever. Most of them re-sign with their teams (like Thompson will). Jazz have to draft, trade or sign players like Mirotic, Bjelica, etc.

As I mentioned, I'm counting on the expirings and other assets to get that difference maker at the deadline. Plenty of teams will be dreaming about 2019 free agency and there will be good vets for sale. In order for Utah to even bid on a top-tier free agent, they'd have to be $30m under the cap. That means not having Favors or Exum, renouncing the rights to Rubio. It certainly means not bringing in Bjelica. It's just not going to happen. DL isn't going to throw away next year and hope a star is going to want to join the Jazz. The only remote chance Utah has is George this year due to his friendship with Donovan. But I seriously doubt that will happen.

So yes, I'm proposing Favors on a multi-year deal. Same with Exum.

I dont know where he is getting those. With Crowder and Gobert our defensive rating is 91.6. Which is great, although over half of those minutes are with Crowder at the 3. With the other guys you listed our defensive rating is much worse that the 98 defensive rating when Favors and Gobert are on the court. It is 99.6 with either Jerebko or Sef at the 4. Maybe he is just trying to balance those numbers and making sweeping statements. Our regular season ratings with Crowder were great but over the last 3-4 years we are best when Favors and Gobert are on the court together.

That also does not take into account that our offensive rating isnt worse with Favors at the 4 over those stretch guys. Plus in the Playoffs this year Favors numbers got way better and was by far our best big by those ratings in the playoffs.

This year in the playoffs Favors was our 2nd best Net rating player just behind Rubio.

I agree, if we are not landing a solid FA then we should sign him to a 1 year deal. Or even better a 1 year deal with a team option for the second year and we can even over pay for him to make it worth it for him.

Where did I say if we get PG we should also match an offer for Favors? Besides, we don't get to "match" since he's a RFA.

Obviously, to sign PG, Utah needs to free up cap space, so they'd need to renounce Favs and the non-guaranteed guys. Although I believe PG has an option, so he could exercise it in order to work out a trade with OKC.
