Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

One big problem with PG13 signing with the Jazz is what happened to Durant when he signed with the team that beat him in the playoffs the year before? He is still getting **** for it. PG13 will get **** for signing with the team that beat him in the playoffs and he knows that.
PG would get 0 **** for signing with the Jazz because they beat him in the first round. Most anybody wouldn’t even know/remember. Durant getting **** had more to do with the fact that he was joining a super team that set the record for regular season wins that year. Him blowing a 3-1 lead against that team in the WCF was just icing on that **** cake. If anything, people would herald him as more heroic for not choosing the path of least resistance.

Let me clarify - I would only use our 2019 1st to dump Burks IF Paul George said he wanted to sign here.

Also, my idea of Burks, Bradley and 2019 1st for Deng and Kuzma is better than Denver's offer because LA is still left with Deng in the Denver scenario. If LA has Faired AND Deng, they cant get Kawhi, PG and LBJ. With my idea, they could have that dream with all 3. It all comes down to how much LA and SA value Kuzma. If they value him as a future star, my idea won't go. If they value him as a good starter but expendable for a star, my idea has merit.

The team that beat KD, and with whom he signed, was a historically great team who had won the NBA championship just three year before. Hardly comparable to PG signing with the Jazz, who have 0 championships in their history.

I bet the Jazz ask thabo is they can move back the date of the option until the 9th with the rest. It would be hard for Thabo to agree to that because it would take 9 days away from him to find another spot if the Jazz don't pick up his option. The first will be an interesting day for the Jazz.

As for PG13 I would love to see him in a Jazz uniform but I am realistic and don't think that is going to happen.

Exum I believe that Jazz are going to let him go out and determine his market value. They might just let him sign a contract and match it if it is reasonable. they will meet with him prior telling him they want him but go and enjoy the recruitment process. ALA Gordon Hayward

I love Favors and if he comes back it will be on a 1+1 with a team option for next year, but, I don't want to see him on the Jazz next year because i believe there are better option for the Jazz that will help them be more competitive. I would rather see the Jazz sign Luc Mbah a Moute. he is one of the best defenders in the NBA and a solid 3 point shooter. He can easily come in and and replace a lot of the defense that we would lose with Derrick. He would be 1 year maybe 3 to 4 million and Favors would be 3 to 4 times that.

If I was the Jazz my first call and #1 target would be Mario Hezonja. He is the kind of player that would out play his contract. If he is getting a consistent 20 to 25 minutes a game he is going to be consistent for the Jazz and I think he would quickly move into the starting line up and be a major contributor for the Jazz. I think the culture that the Jazz have made with development but more importantly with international players and coaches this would be a prime destination.

If thabo doesn’t oblige I’d tell him we will decline the option... can resign him later. I think he gets the minimum if we don’t pick up the option... so we could give him a few million and allow him to save some face. He should help us out here... it’s very likely we dont find the move that leads to us waiving him and everyone else.

Honestly - I know people pooped on the idea before, but Rudy Gay would be the biggest impact guy we could get that is realistic. He's a full time small ball 4. Good enough shooter, rebounder, defender, and creator for what we need. Gets to the FT line at a decent clip... shot better than Crowder last year in a down year for him shooting and is an okay defender (certainly better than joe johnson was either year). Still gets a steal and block per game.

The hate has gone too far. Let's give him a 1+1 with final year a team option or $1M guaranteed at the full MLE. Gives us variance... keep Jonas and Thabo or Favors. If Favs walks we keep Thabo and go full small ball mode.

It's not sexy, but outside of signing Paul George my ideal offseason would be to re-sign both Favors and Exum to reasonable mid-term deals and then bring in a stretch big option near or at the MLE (still think Bjelica is a good fit). I'm not enamored with Jabari Parker - if his market is where I fear it will be, I don't think he's worth the long-term financial commitment.

The one "splash" I hope we make is to score an extra first-round pick somewhere in the midst of the Kawhi/Lebron/Paul George shenanigans - using our option contracts to help a team clear cap space, etc. Our "tradeable asset" cupboard has been relatively bare, but with Grayson Allen in the fold and an extra R1 in DL's arsenal I'll feel better about things.

Last comment, if we do move on from Favors one guy I would support going after is Aaron Gordon. He doesn't shoot as well as I'd like, but my hope is that would improve and we would be just a terror athletically vs. other teams. He's got the length and athleticism to legitimately guard all 5 spots.

Not convinced Orlando lets him go though, even at a max offer sheet.

The more I look at Gordon the more I think I'm out on him.

I'm fascinated to see what happens with Boogie and Parker... those guys may get completely shut out of big money this summer. I've liked the idea of Parker more and more as I've seen the projected dollars go down. There will be some bargains this offseason... curious to see who they will be.
