If Kanter and Williams are gone by #3, take Jimmer

If I am allowed to say bad word here, I will use it and put it before NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO for a response.

IMO it all comes down to how talent and potential translates from college to the NBA - I believe Irving is head & shoulders above Jimmer in both, and I think Knight has a small edge as well.
This is why I see using the 3rd pick on Knight as a waste.
I disagree. The only reason I said Knight as a "small edge" is because he's a 19-year old who played 1 year of college basketball while Jimmer played 4 years and was a 3-year starter. With a smaller body of work, you have to rely on player-development and potential alot more for Knight than Fredette, but I definitely think Knight has the tools to be a superior player and wouldn't be opposed to selecting him 3rd.

Actually, we should trade Favors and Hayward and our #3 pick with Cleveland for the #1 pick to get Jimmer...that sounds fair.:)

Best player available is always a no-brainer with the third pick. Since Melo Anthony was taken with the third pick in '03, the best player taken with the third pick was Deron Williams in 2005. Saying BPA and correctly picking him is two very different things, though. Talent wise, Williams was a good pick that year, but we all know how that turned out. More than half the time since '03 the third pick has been a bust. Add the fact that this is a weak draft class, now Jazz management has an even harder time. Now add the NBA's dirty little secret (the want of a white star) and the possibility of Jimmer being the next NBA poster boy in a Kings uniform - however possible or not - all this weighs heavily on Jazz management. Since Melo being picked third in '03, most of the #3 picks have not panned out as starters. Many believe they know who the BPA for the #3 pick this year is, but history shows that we will be wrong. The worst possible scenario is that the Jazz do not pick Jimmer and he becomes a star with someone else. You better believe this is on the Jazz's mind. With the weak draft class this year, the only guarantee for the Jazz is that Fredette will make them some money for at least one season.

I'm finding that the general consensus is that there's a huge dropoff in talent after the first few picks. If Cleveland actually makes the wise decision for their franchise (I hope they don't) and takes Kanter first, I do believe that the T-Wolves (or whomever they trade their pick to) will take Derrick Williams. That means that Kyrie Irving will be available, which, for many, will make him the obvious choice.

However, I've been thinking about how much Jimmer is impressing at his workouts. Also, I love the stones on this kid challenging the other top guards to working out with him head-to-head. I also don't think it's a coincidence that he will potentially be doing this in front of the Jazz brass. I believe that Jimmer will be taken well before the #12 pick (probably by the Kings) and I don't reckon they'll want to give him up. I say this because he is a unique talent. Any team that is willing to draft him relatively high is going to be convinced of how great he could become; thus they will not want to trade him once they get him. I've never seen anyone shoot like he does and he is making it his mission to improve his defense.

Those who know Jimmer's story know about his drive and work ethic. By the time he's 1-2 years into his career, I really don't think any issues he might still have defensively will be what people will be talking about when they discuss Jimmer. They'll be talking about how talented a scorer he is and how undervalued he was going into the draft. Utah will have made a gutsy choice at #3 because they didn't want to risk losing out on such a fine prospect that would be the perfect fit for the team.

At #12, I'm sure we can find a good swingman to fill AK's likely absence. Even though he's more of a shooting guard, I think, with his scoring ability and long arms that Marshon Brooks out of my alma mater Providence College would be a great pickup at the 12 spot.

So, in the event that the top 2 picks go the way I mentioned above, I think this is the best way to make the proverbial lemons into lemonade. Another strategy with this scenario would be the Jazz drafting Irving and trading him to whomever takes Jimmer and getting some more value with additional player(s) from that team while cutting some dead weight of our own in the process.

As far as I'm concerned, I just want to hear Stern announce that the "Utah Jazz select Jimmer Fredette from Brigham Young University." I believe that he will become a cornerstone of this franchise going forward. If Kanter and Williams are gone by 3, I don't care which pick the Jazz use on him.

I'll challenge knight and kemba, maybe the jazz should draft me.

Chris you have had some solid posts on the board but this one is just way out in left field. No way Jimmer should be the 3rd pick.

JMO, but I believe that's also the "least likely" scenario. If the Jazz were only worried about making money for "atleast one season," they would've held onto Deron and hoped to make the playoffs before his contract ran out.

I would rather have Irving over all the point guards but if irving is gone and I'm choosing a point guard I pick Jimmer, would rather have kanter though.

The only danger is Sacramento. Don't blow the 3rd pick. There will be a good prospect @ 12 even if Sacramento grabs Fredette.

This is why I say if wlliams is what is left of the top 3 we trade to Washington for #6 and 18. Draft Jimmer if the jazz feel so inclined or wait until 12 could be a risk.
