If not Rubio then what?

What is your opinion on committing to Rubio as our point guard of the future in the offseason?

Would you target other point guards? I don't know who's on the market. But I do know Exum isn't the PG of the future. He's more of a wing, and I don't see him as a primary play maker in the first unit. I also don't think committing to Rubio is the right move.

I think the Jazz would benefit from transitioning Mitchell to the point, much like Harden, and many other high usage stars have done. Then perhaps target another wing or big who can space the floor. Someone like Harris for example. The choice would also depend on whether Favors option is picked (I vote no).

Thoughts?

Mitchell is the obvious answer if you cant get anyone else.

Kemba Walker would be another option. He and Mitchell would be an undersized backcourt, but it would be a very dangerous one. Obviously you would have to approach the max to get him.

Eric Bledsoe could be an option. If the Bucks max out Middleton they have to let go of at least one of Bledsoe/Brogdon and it will probably be Bledsoe since he will be an unrestricted free agent.

DeAngelo Russell or Spencer Dinwiddie from the Nets.

Kemba Walker would be fantastic. He'd only be 29. He'd give us a few good years. I don't think Bledsoe nor Russell are good enough for that role on a championship contender.

I doubt the Jazz sign any of them. Likely they will prefer a wing and try to keep Rubio.

Playing Mitchell at the 1 would open up the floor more and put more pressure on defenses, given Mitchell's ability to get on the rim. Defenses tend to sag off of Rubio. Mitchell would also have a strength advantage in most matchups. Maybe in a year, Exum could also become the starter at the 1 if his game keeps maturing. Mitchell and Exum could run a two-guard front and altnerate managing possessions similar to the way Chris Paul and James Harden do.

That said, the Jazz probably like Rubio enough to keep him if the price isn't too high.

I think if the Jazz can get a PG that can spread the floor combined with Mitchell I think that'll open the floor up big time for the rest of our guys as well. You need a PG who can move the ball but also keep the defense honest.

I like Dinwiddie and Brogdon. Kemba is unrealistic.

My issue is Ricky and Dante have some of the same flaws... so we need some variety when teams decide to pack the paint.

I also think Grayson could be part of the answer. Would like to see him run some PnR... he’s mostly been a spot up shooter/slasher.

IDK why Kemba is unrealistic. He is going to go to who pays him the big bucks and I think a lot of teams will be hesitant due to his size.

Honestly... George Hill is perfect... to bad he was an *** apparently cuz he’d be pretty easy to get.

I think Charlotte rolls out a 5 year max... if they don’t I think NY does. It sounds like his first choice is Charlotte. Once one or two free agents sign with their own teams there will be more max spots than max players... kemba likely has his choice of max contracts.

other teams will love Mitchell playing the 1. HE isn't great yet at setting up others. Other teams will let Michelle go off for 40 while locking everyone else down. Bad move. Not saying he can't and won't play pg but at this time he is far away from playing exclusive at the 1. Imo

When Rubio got injured at the end of the OKC series, Mitchell played a lot of time at the 1 and was quite successful at it. If you look at games last year that Rubio missed, the Jazz were still pretty successful in large part due to Mitchell sharing the PG role with Joe Ingles.

I don’t know what the plan is... I can tell you I wouldn’t want to commit big money to Ricky.

I’d like to get someone who can shoot and create a bit. We don’t need a true pg... so it should open up the field a bit. Things just have to fit a little better.
