Has anyone seen this series on The History Channel or read anything on the "Ancient Astronauts" theories?

I was out of town for work last week and got completely hooked on it. I went out and bought the book "Chariots of the Gods" by Erich Von Daniken and I can't believe how fascinating some of the theories are. I'm not sure I'm completely convinced, as buying in 100% would mean I could just as easily believe in the bible, but I will definitely be paying attention on December 21, 2012 (that's when they come back).

Just wanted to see if we could get some discussion going on the subject. Please feel free to include any sarcastic or snarky comments if you feel so inclined.

Not sure if this is sarcasm, or not, but I'll bite. I tried to nab the one from the Gr8ness Facebook page, but it was crap, so I had to make my own. It turned out pretty good. You can borrow it if you want, or you can use this:

Since my wife's birthday is 12/21, I just hope the aliens return before I have to give her her birthday present. I'll look like even more of an assshole than usual.

You're either idiotic or completely condescending the intelligence of ancient peoples if you believe the only way for their grand architecture and artwork to be completed is by the help of extraterrestrial intelligent life.

I haven't watched that show for more than about five minutes without ridiculous claims being made. I've watched other single programs similar to that. If these guys would actually do correct archaeology instead of making wild hypothesis not on the basis of the scientific method, then they wouldn't come up with such garbage.

EDIT: So you don't think it's possible for the ancient cultures to do what they did on their own?

So, if it doesn't completely match up with the current stream of theory, then it is a ridiculous claim? Like the Earth being flat? I'm hesitant to call an Archaeologist a "scientist". It is possibly the one field that there is nothing but speculation, especially as it pertains to ancient civilizations.

I just said that I am skeptical of it. If you stepped down off your high horse and approached it a little more objectively, some of the questions they ask make you take a step back. To this day, no one has ever shown how ancient civilizations were able to build these monolithic structures that would take us, using modern technology, decades to complete. Whether I believe it was because of ET's, I'm not sure, but there is something missing, and that's just the tip of the iceberg when you watch all six 1.5 hour episodes.
 
They're not doing science. Simple as that. History Channel special tend to go off the deep end on many of these types of things. First they through out a reasonable, if controversial, explanation of a historical question, like for instance the one on the Holy Grail.

The problem is that they assume a wild answer, than assume another wild answer assuming the first wild answer is true, then on and on and on. The watch tower isn't a watch tower, but a cleverly created building showing exactly where something is 500 miles away. It IS ridiculous, and, based on what you're saying about archaeology,

You don't even know what some of the suppositions are. You are simply writing them off. Obviously there are things that are far fetched, I have no misgivings about that, but for you to try and tell me that it is all ridiculous when you haven't even been privy to the subject matter is ignorant. You're turning this into an argument against anything but mainstream accepted theories on Archaeology and The History Channel's methods for producing a TV series. If you want to talk about a specific theory that is mentioned, then lets discuss, but to just roundly reject all ideas presented from a specific viewpoint is very obtuse.

So, you want me to spoon feed you the material so you can heroically and triumphantly shoot it down. Come on. If you haven't seen it, and have no intention in having civil discourse on it, then drop it. I'm sure you're a very intelligent person, I can tell from many of your other posts, but I'm not going to sit here and play devil's advocate and argue that some of the theories are plausible, just so you can quote whatever the popular theory is, and tell me how absurd it is that I even entertain the possibilities just so you can stroke your ego.

If presented properly, then there's no reason I wouldn't engage in "civil discourse." The problem is, most of the "theories" presented (actually more along the lines of hypotheses since there often seems to be little to no science behind them) have no basis in fact, only supposition. Oftentimes, the base is "we can't explain it, so it must be alien help." "It" being something like you mentioned, construction of a structure with means unknown currently to the modern age. With this base, the people in the shows try to fit everything into this alien mold, simple logic be damned.

And using the term "popular theory" just isn't the right way to think. You need to think more along the lines of "accepted theory." Accepted because the mounds of evidence suggest a certain thing. To change accepted theory, there needs to be larger mound of evidence to suggest otherwise. An example of this recently is the thoughts on what groups migrated to the Americas first and how far each group traveled and who modern Native Americans ancestors really are. There is nothing in scientific magazines/journals that would suggest anything of that nature in regards to how ancient civilizations built their structures.
 
I love the show as well. I've always been an alien junkie. Those that are cracking jokes about it know nothing. Some of things these ancient people did, couldn't not be done today. How the hell did they move 60 ton carved stones stories high? If you want to watch some good alien stuff, google Phil Schneider. Crazy stuff. I'm not sure if I completely buy into like the OP said, but it's very interesting.
