2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

This undersells the history of black people THEMSELVES in Memphis. The history THEY created. And that there is a substantial black community there in contrast to a place that is one of the most bereft of black people in the entire nation.

He’ll be 33 in a month. Not 31 (Conley) or 32. We ain’t winning **** this year. Maybe next but with a 34 year old, sort of fat pg who has bad postseason numbers historically?

That’s a let’s just please the fans move imo. Conley is a let’s make this team legit better and go for it all the next few years move.
I'm not saying either way, cuz I'm not informed enough to know, but a lot of people I've talked to swear Lowry > Conley and they think the Raptors are just inquiring about doing it because of the Lowry tension with Masai.

Looking at the stands at a Jazz game is honestly straight-up embarrassing. The socio-racial homogeny here is almost laughable.

Generally speaking, areas of this country with large black populations are due to one of two factors:

1. Their ancestors were brought to that region against their will as slaves;

2. During the 100 years between the end of the civil war and the civil rights advances of the 1960s, blacks migrated to large urban areas and industrial areas outside of the south for better economic opportunity (the same reason everyone moves to a different region of the country). The migration was particularly acute in light of the horrific treatment they continued to endure in the South after the Civil War. That's why there's a sizable black population in New York, Chicago, Detroit, Philly, Southern California, San Francisco Bay Area, etc.

Utah doesn't meet either of these criteria. Mormons weren't slave holders and no part of Utah was an inviting destination for economic opportunity through the 1960s. All four of my grandparents were born in Utah and all four of them made their way to California between the 1930s to 1950s.

I don't have the stats on this, but I imagine that the black population in Utah steadily increases (at least I hope) as becomes a place of better economic opportunity than it used to be. As Hispanic immigrants seek better opportunity and come into this country, Utah's Hispanic population has likewise increased.

In summary, I don't see a reason why you should be embarrassed. About 2% of Oregon's population is black, not much more than Utah. Colorado, Washington and Arizona's black population as a percentage is a fraction of the national rate (3-4% vs. around 12% nationwide).

Great idea. Let's stay focused on a guy who said he doesn't want us. Awesome strategy.

Lots of players haven't wanted to play in Utah. Then they come here and love the fans and the way the community treats them. I'd take my chances on him loving it in Utah. Not sure what all I'd give up for him but I really think he would enjoy playing for the Jazz if he does make his way onto this roster.

He just wants to be in the East. He's been the poster child for the underrated player trope for years. If he's not going to be with the team he's dedicated his career to, he would prefer to go somewhere he may be able to get a little recognition (All-Star selection, etc). You can't blame him. It doesn't mean he wouldn't be happy playing in Utah, it's just his preference if given a choice of conferences. I don't blame him.

Do POC participate in more MLM schemes than Mormons in Utah? I think thats what drives economic activity in Utah. Well that and all the "whats the latest snake oil we can sell to GNC and health stores" by claiming it increases virility, muscle mass or mitigates any number of ailments?

Jk...besides the huge data gathering by the Feds, I know there are a number of high techs that have sprung up in the SL- Utah County corridor, driven by entrepreuners or relocations from the anti-business laws in CA.

Utah was a slave state and not only a slave state, but mormons were brutal to the slaves. Brigham Young ordered extermination orders of local native Americans and they captured and sold the natives into slavery.

Mormon doctrine was that black people were black because they sinned in the premortal life and that blacks would be slaves in heaven. It was god’s form of mercy toward the less valiant in the pre-existence.
