Summer 2019 Roster Discussion

This thread is for discussion about all ideas and rumors for summer 2019 Utah Jazz player movement.
This is not to act as the draft prospect thread.

The Salary Cap for 2019-20 will be $109 million (up $7 million from 18-19).
The Luxury Tax Limit will be $134 million (up $8 million from 18-19).
https://sports.yahoo.com/report-nba-sets-salary-cap-2019-20-2020-21-seasons-020033583.html

For 2019-20, here are the contracts:
Gobert $25
Ingles $12
Exum $9.6
Crowder $7.8
Korver $7.5 ($3.5 ETO - but not happening)
Mitchell $3.6
Allen $2.5
Bradley $2
O'Neale $1.6 (team option - but not happening)
Draft pick cap hold $2
Lowest Salary Realistically Possible: $76 Million (includes minimum salaries to meet full roster requirement)

Favors $16.9 (team option on 7/6/2019)
Neto $2 (team option on 7/6/2019)
Niang $1.6 (team option - guarantees 1/10/20)
TOTAL: $94 million (if we picked up all team options)

These guys count against cap space until we either re-sign or renounce them
Rubio $22.5 cap hold
Thabo $6.8 cap hold
Udoh $4.4 cap hold

NOTE: I'm not moving on from the current roster or bailing from the current season. I'm starting this thread with the hope that we can centralize most of the summer discussion here instead of trying to track 5 or 6 different threads.

Let's Go Jazz

Tl;dr we’re running it back + draft pick. But don’t worry, people are on good deals that become valuable assets at the deadline, so we can’t fully evaluate those signings until we see what they’re cashed in for.

The dangling carrot of future flexibility.

lol. let's finish this season first. cuz how we finish it will have direct impact on how DL operate in the summer.

We take a nuanced approach to the past, rationalizing why things didn’t/couldn’t happen, but always look to the future as if it’s a guarantee that there’s not some kind of nuance or complicating factors that could compromise what our hopes for the future are. So, we’ll get a handful of people here saying it’s irrational to think we won’t do something big in the summer, while some of us will point to some of the realistic challenges that may prevent that. But then when it comes and goes, they’ll point to the realistic challengers that they previously dismissed, and then point to some arbitrary, hypothetical future where things unfold spontaneously and without any snags.

We will hear about how aggressive the front office is being looking for trades around the draft. Then we will hear how aggressive the front office is being on the free agent market. Ultimately we pick up Favors option, re-sign Ricky to a 2 year deal similar to Favors with a team option for the second year, re-sign Sefelosha and Udoh to minimum contracts. We will run it back with the exact same team plus whoever we draft. Then we can listen to Dennis Lindsey: "we explored every option and scenario to try and improve the team but ultimately decided that this group has such a unique chemistry and continuity that we decided to bring them back and focus on internal growth and development. We love the progress that Ricky has made since joining the team and we really feel like he can be a facsimile Jason Kidd. Our biggest free agent acquisition is a fully healthy Dante Exum, he's made great strides this summer and he has Jazz DNA in spades. We don't believe that Dante's injury prone and his best ability going forward will be availability. We're really excited about our rookie, we feel like he can contribute and be a rotation guy right away, and he actually has even thicker hand pads than Grayson Allen which is gonna help with ball handling, hook passes, pocket passes and shooting. Like Dante, he also has Jazz DNA in spades. Donovan is actually healthy this summer and has a whole offseason to work on his game, he's spending a lot of time here in Utah working with Johnnie Bryant and we feel like he's poised to take another step and begin the season in a great rhythm. We believe in our guys, we believe in their character, we believe in Quin and the coaching staff and their ability to develop talent. We've set ourselves up to have great financial flexibility going forward with some of the contracts that we've signed and the Millers have given me great resources to work with. I'm as excited as anyone for the season to start so that we can see what we have and try to find our level".

Nailed it.

Nailed it.
B+.
Didn't use the catch word "connectivity" or the phrase "we don't know what this team can do when fully healthy." Also didn't mention Favors is working on his 3's and Utah will have "internal development." Alluded to that last term, but didn't use those exact words.

Thanks, LoPo.
I track this every year. Hadn't done it for 2019 yet, so it's good to see it laid out.

Thank you.

It really helps me to see the numbers at the top of a thread like this when everybody starts talking ideas.

I am fully invested in the current season.
I just wanted to have my thoughts on record this early just to compare to later when we see how it all plays out.

*If we do not make trade during the draft where we send out any of our players, I would...

#1 - keep the 10 listed before: Rudy, Joe, Ex, Jae, KK, DM, GA, TB, Royce, our 1st ($73.5 million)
#2 - wait to waive Niang until more is known (11 players $75 million)
#3 - renounce Thabo & Udoh. Can re-sign later if we want.

#4a - offer Rubio a long term declining contract - $10,$9,$8 million (12 players $85 million)
#4b - if Rubio declines, renounce him & keep Neto (12 players $77 million)

#5a - with Rubio, $22 million to pursue free agents
#5b - without Rubio, $30 million to pursue free agents

All the moves above happen before we have to make the decision on Favors on July 6.

This makes complete sense and I agree. The problem is, it prevents people from posting thousands of things that make no sense and have no chance of happening. What fun is that? Case in point, see the trade thread.

I don't have any problem with this thread. It's fun to think about what the team is going to look like next season while realizing that there's still a pretty high ceiling on this season. Here's what I would do:

1 - Try to trade Favors and the 2019 first for some player that can help now on a bad team. I don't think there are any obvious candidates for this, so not really expecting anything to happen. Maybe Favors for Gallo?
2 - If this doesn't work, trade the 2019 first for a future first if possible, or draft the BPA.
3 - Call all of the big-time Free Agents on midnight July 1st. See if anyone has any interest in the Jazz. Again, not expecting this to happen.
4 - Let Rubio walk. Let Favors walk if you can get some guys to agree to team-friendly deals.
5 - When you strike out on the big-time names, go after guys with high offensive ceilings that can be had on team-friendly deals. Basically, take 2017's Free Agency and go after guys with offensive backgrounds instead of defensive. Specifically, I'd try to sign Rodney Hood and Jabari Parker on 4 year, $40 million dollar contracts. These are deals that could potentially be flipped for another star in the future.
6 - Hedge your bet on the PG position. Sign a high ceiling vet (I'd honestly go hard after Isaiah Thomas) to start or back up Dante. Hope that one of them becomes a star.

So yeah, I just suggested you sign Isaiah Thomas, Jabari Parker, and Rodney Hood in the same offseason. I'm expecting most of you to hate these ideas, but I don't think it's a terrible backup plan when we inevitably strike out on every other target.

Suddenly the thought of re-signing Rubio, picking up Favors option and running it back with the same team again next year doesn't seem so bad. :D

You can watch basketball this year and thoroughly enjoy it... while also considering what's next. I appreciate the idea behind the thread and though put into original post. I mean we are probably tracking the 2022 draft already so why not look to FA that happens in 4-5 months and is potentially a big pivot point for the franchise.

I mean if the backup plan is to take fliers on guys like Isaiah Thomas and Jabari Parker (I'm going to assume Hood isn't going to be a Jazzman again), then that's not the worst idea in the world.

Giving someone like Jabari Parker a 4 year deal is a bad idea though considering his injury history and him needing to play his way into shape every season.
