I don't know how many LOTR nerds there are around here but seeing this today got me super hyped. I was worried they were going to hew too close to the events of The Lord of the Rings but instead it looks like the series will be set in the second age of the Tolkien mythos, thousands of years before the events depicted in the movies. It wasn't clear that Amazon had the rights to develop that part of the story, so this is pretty exciting.

I'm down. Huge Tolkien geek.

Cool! Stories from the Silmarillion, I assume?
Yeah, or the Akallabeth at least. Never really been sure if that's considered part of The Silmarillion or not.

If I'm not mistaken the creation of the rings of power and deception of Sauron, fall of Numenor, and the final alliance and war against Sauron unfold over hundreds of years. It will be interesting to see how the show runners grapple with this. Maybe they'll focus on one major event per season, do kind of a anthology thing?

Between thus, Good Omens, and The Three Body Problem, it sounds like Amazon is trying to become the streaming service for nerds. Which, to be completely clear, I am totally cool with.
Makes sense. Have to be established to be a motion picture. Have the popularity of LotR, Harry Potter, and Hunger Games. Otherwise you bomb, like Mortal Engines. Surprising to me, since I liked Mortal Engines.
