What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

It doesn't matter what Donovan thinks of him, Donovan's not the GM. Signing players because they're friends with your star player is no way to run a team.
It might be if your guy is Hayward who has an extremely difficult time befriending NBA players.

But we have DM, who is mother-****ing Air Bud.

What's your source?

Check my other post... NBA FAQs, Dan Clayton, and history... plenty of retired guys still hit the cap sheet.

We could waive Korver and get his cap number down to 1.2M... he could also negotiate a buyout to help out.

We’d simultaneously, necessarily lose his Bird Rights as well? That sucks.

That doesn’t change my larger stance.

Yeah only way we remove his current salary is by waiving him which makes him a free agent. Can't use some other team's free agent in a sign and trade and we'd no longer have bird rights.

Basically Favs is either back at $18M or on another team's roster. Maybe he would come back and negotiate a long term deal with us after clearing waivers but that seems like a long shot and would require us to be his only or last solid option of getting a long term deal.

Dan Clayton says the cap hit stays if he retires... Only way it comes off is under medical retirement. Would take a year and he doesn't have a medical issue.

CBA FAQs says addresses this...

13. Exactly what is included when computing total team salaries? What is cap room? What is a cap hold?
A team's cap room (referred to simply as "room" in the CBA) refers to its ability to sign players to free agent contracts. If a team is above the cap, then its room is limited to the exceptions it possesses. If the team is below the cap, then its room is how far it is below the cap when all salaries and cap holds are included. Cap holds are "placeholders" for players the team is expected to sign in the future. For example, a team is expected to sign its unsigned first round draft pick, so an amount is reserved for this signing in the form of a cap hold. A team $10 million below the cap with $4 million in cap holds therefore has $6 million in room. A team $5 million under the cap with $6 million in cap holds is not considered to be under the cap at all, and must use exceptions to sign players. The following are included in team salary:

  • Salaries of all active and inactive players1, including likely bonuses.
  • The full season salary of any players the team acquires in midseason trades.
  • Salaries paid or payable to waived players, minus any set-off amounts2 and subject to the Stretch provision (see question number 65).
  • Any salary still being paid to retired players (see question number 61).

Keep stacking them Ls... waiver process yesterday... retirement cap hit... then doubling down declaring me to be the one taking the L
Dan Clayton doesn't know everything, although he is often good with this stuff. What was his source?

And the salary cap FAQ is ambiguous and does not directly answer this question. It just says any money paid to retired players counts against the cap. But it doesn't say the actual salary must be paid.

Well that’s the only circumstance he comes back for me; both parties strike out and we get a bargain.

I just want to see this organization really ****ing go for it. For once. If they strike out, pick up good players on below-market deals that got frozen out in the frenzy.

Can someone clarify to me what it would mean for another team if they acquire Korver? If they waive and stretch him (because of retirement or whatever) does he only account for $1.2 million on their cap sheet next year? Paging @Handlogten's Heros .

For the record, I am down to roll with him as-is if he is. I think he can easily play another two seasons if he’s handled with care. I think he was over-player this year.

1) “guaranteed contract” isn’t ambiguous.
2) for the purposes of transactions, whether or not the player is actually paid is virtually irrelevant.

I mean Ginobili and Duncan are retired and still getting paid by the Spurs... nba also has an over 38 rule that prevents teams from giving older guys cap friendly deals that run past when they would be playing to give them more.

My sources are better than Cys which are again his butt

I’m not sure... I would assume all of his money would be picked up if someone claimed him... they’d likely just wait out the waiver process and do a minimum deal.

Who is going to give Favors a multiyear deal making $13? Who? The guy is more valuable to us than other teams.

The teams who would love him (Charlotte, Miami, etc) don't have that kind of money. Teams with space like LA, LA, NY, Dallas, aren't gonna burn their space paying him that much on a multiyear deal.

If we waive Favors telling him its because we want to extend him for longer, I think he more likely stays than goes.

I wasn’t clear with my language; if we TRADED Korver to another team, do they also have the ability to pay as low as $1.2 million for the season (if they stretched him, obvi)?

Dallas could absolutely do that... they don’t have a healthy starting center and Favs would pair well with the Zinger.

Clips too... get Leonard and use leftover space to nab a starting center and keep Gallinari...

Lakers might strike out and throw a good one year offer that is preferable for him... get the starting gig and go on the market when there is lots of money and not a lot of free agents.

Why would favors be more valuable to us? Why? We have a top 3 center who can’t shoot... he might make the least sense for us.

Like if that is such a great bargain for us why would we be the only team that would give it to him? Why? If a guy has no market then why would we make him a ****ing priority?
